Smitty closed door meeting with Richardson

Smitty probably was telling jerry and the front office that jimmy isn't the man, and that they need to re-evaluate the qb position. the FO hearing it from SS probably would be the reassurance they would need to draft another qb. Sure, smitty could be asking for a trade, but december is an odd time. Sure it wouldn't suprise me, but closed meetings don't always have to be negative, it could be the FO just getting opinions from one of their best players.

I fully expect a big changeover this offseason, and that includes tagging DWill and trading him, trading Smitty, trading Gamble, and possibly even letting Kalil walk...

We'd get at least a 3rd for Smitty or else make him finish out his contract... so don't worry about that... Possibly even a 2nd...

Gamble could bring a 3rd plus one...

DWill could bring a 2nd plus one...

A lot of those moves will depend on CBA stuff, but I'm betting that they'll work all that out... If a deal is reached though, that could also mean goodbye to Charles Johnson among others...

The good news is that monetarily, we should be in excellent shape to spend some money... The bad news is that we've kinda shut down any desire for someone to want to play here... That will (hopefully) be corrected with some new FO staff hires...

It's a terrible time to request a trade. It does not help the team. It does not help the player. It's one thing to meet with the owner privately because you're unhappy, but demanding a trade when you physically can't get one is...

well, I just don't think Smitty would do that.

Maybe a little birdy told him that they (Hurney and JR) have no pressing desire to draft a QB in the first round. This made Smitty panic, as he will only continue to rot here, under these circumstances. So he, Smitty, went to JR on his own to pretty much say: get me a QB or I want out.

I like that complete guess best.

you don't let Kalil walk. You put him some consistant bodies at the G positions and he will be back to his old self.

it is not a terrible time imo. Season is done.....Smitty knows lots of decisions will be made shortly in a couple months. Now is probably a good time to get on the same page w/ Jerry.

the rest of the league has had to gameplan against him for what is soon to be almost a decade. They have seen the film.......the rest of the league knows they can get a legit WR for cheap likely b/c they can play the troublemaker card and it will work.

Do they?

We're Panther fans. We see Smitty, a man among boys.

Outside, more objective minds may see a guy on the wrong side of thirty with two major injuries in two years, a severe drop-off in production (some might even say effort) and a history of being a bad boy who can't always keep his mouth shut (or his fists unclenched).

Fair or not, if Marty Hurney tries to swing a trade, those are the things they'll bring up when it's time to talk about compensation and market value.

You can't look at him through Panther fan eyes and be realistic.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
