John Fox vs Tom Coughlin

Happy Panther

Recommended Posts

Coughlin had an above average run with jacksonville ending up 68-60 (128 games) with his last 3 seasons 19-29. Made it to the AFC championship game twice but never the superbowl.

Foxy is 73-69 and was 71-57 (128 games!) before this season with a superbowl appearance and a better playoff record

Coughlin gets picked after a year by NYG going 64-46 and gets them a superbowl.

Coughlin was 56 when he left the Jags

Foxy is 55

On Coughlin's coaching style

"Coach Coughlin, he kind of lets it slide. He kind of lets it roll off because he knows you're going to come back and fix it."

Wow, a football player who considers Coughlin understanding, flexible, and maybe even a bit too soft.

"Firm, fair, honest, demanding," Coughlin said of his approach as he stood outside the winners' locker room. "I try to be consistent. No matter how difficult it goes, I try to maintain our course and keep people motivated, and we don't fluctuate back and forth. I try to keep it just the way it's presented to the players originally."

Sound familiar at all?

I bet Fox coaches again if only because he fits the formula.

Anyone with me?

anyone who thinks fox won't land a coaching job as soon as he leaves carolina is severly misguided.

how so?

the vast majority of coaching jobs have gone to new coaches the past several years...and there have been a lot of them. teams just aren't looking for retreads and those couple that are will be looking at a few others before fox.

he may land a coaching job, but it won't be a HC job.

Also possible he learns some lessons and is actually better at his next job.

Guys like Marv Levy, Dick Vermeil, and even Bill Belichick were a lot better on later jobs than they were on their first.

Of course, if he succeeds elsewhere, especially if he succeeds faster than the next Panthers coach does, people will be screaming that we were wrong to let him go.

But it won't be true. A mutual split is likely the best thing for all parties right now.

Dallas job might be in play again.

Jones was reportedly fuming after last night, and he's been known to make impulsive decisions before.

I think the Dallas fan base would be in an uproar if JJ brought a 2-14 winning coach in at the end of this season. JJ is going to want to make a big splash and Fox is not it.

Possible, but there aren't that many big names out there right now.

It's already been said that Cowher's not going to Dallas. Gruden's plans are reportedly for next year and elsewhere. Don't think Dungy's coming back? Billick? Wouldn't excite me anymore than Fox, honestly.

Jeff Fisher's one I could see, but he's not technically out of a job, yet.

Nightmare scenario? Jones acquires Harbaugh :(

The article regarding Fox was dated Oct 27. I can see JJ keeping the current coach in a one year contract before bringing in Fox next year.

    • It is a tough decision.  There is another factor.  Is he in game shape?  A tired Hunt is not better than an "in-shape" Corbett.  When coming off an injury, it is natural to want to protect the injured area, even if it is completely healed.  This can cause you to contort your body for no reason, lose fundamentals, and it could lead to other injuries.  For example, I had a knee in high school that required getting taped.  That made me aware of the knee (not used to tape on my knee) and I pulled my groin (favoring or dragging the leg with the tape).  The trainer explained the groin injury the way I do here--but scared money makes no money.  If he is cleared to play, he is cleared to play.  Watch him, rotate him in for a series, etc.  Specifically, I would want to watch the matchup--who is winning more--Corbett or Hunt?  How is the defense reacting (if at all) to Hunt being in?  Etc.
    • Shannon was sued for $50 million (settled out of court, I believe) for forcing sex on his girlfriend during a two-year relationship.  He denies it, but ESPN let him go last April.  Chad Johnson's wife filed a police report because he head-butted her in a car and was put on probation. I had to google it.  I watched the Ray Rice video and when you see it, you realize just how vile and cowardly abusing a woman really is.  But for the same point Aussie tried to make, these women are defenseless, and being phyiscally bigger and stronger does not validate your actions.   I can't even stand to watch Steve Smith.  I can't normalize this kind of behavior--again, I do not think R-P had that in mind when he posted this.  When the reason was exposed, we should realize that we are talking life (quality of) and death (in some cases) here.
    • I can respect the fact that we should not glorify or normalize men who have a history of beating women.  I do not think anyone was thinking of that when they posted this, but if head-butting your wife and unconsensual sex (rape) is something you cannot overlook, I agree with that.  I think they are both half-crazed attention hounds regardless of their pasts.
