why talk about (and get high hopes) for players who have yet to declare?

Recommended Posts

just curious...

do people even realize that cam newton and nick fairley have yet to make a decision?

i'm not sure about cam, but i could have sworn i've read in the past few weeks fairley was leaning towards staying in school.

not saying either won't declare, but it's like no one has learned anything from the andrew luck decision.

with no new cba in place and the possibility of no football next season, the thought of not playing football at all and missing the chance to play/graduate with college teammates/classmates is weighing heavy on a lot of these players' minds.

100% chance they both come out IMO

save for the fact people at Auburn aren't convinced they will.

Newton especially could really help his stock staying in imo. He doesn't even need anything like a repeat of this year, he just needs to show an ability to make reads and get the ball deep still and bam, he's a top 10 pick next year, whereas this year he could fall into the last half of the first round or later.

I disagree.

His stock is being predicted to soar at the combine, and Locker, Mallett, and Gabbert don't really impress much of anybody.

Next year, however, he has Luck ahead of him, and possibly anybody else who comes on.

What about that investigation? I know, the NCAA says it's a "closed case" but I am expecting it to surface again after the Championship game Monday. It may be a year from now or a month from now, but I firmly believe the NCAA is intentionally delaying this investigation so Cam would be eligible for this season and they have their dream BCS game.

Just look at the OSU situation. 5 players were allowed to play even though they are suspended at the beginning of next season. Why? So they NCAA keeps their ratings and make their money. Same thing for Newton. Once they make their money, they will come out and say Newton was ineligible.

college players' stock rise and fall at the drop of a dime.

he could fall flat on his face at the combine...and locker, mallett, and gabbert could impress.

If he has a big game Monday he will be the second ranked QB on most boards behind Gabbert. I don't think theres a chance in hell that he stays in. Think of the potential QB class next year....

Luck, Barkley, Moore, Brantley, Murray, Garcia, Jones Pryor and Foles just to name some of the higher prospects. Not to mention if Auburn doesn't have the magical season they had this year Newtons stock will drop drastically. With Luck staying in school Newton will most certainly come out, why do you think he said he supported Luck's decision. Do you think he values his degree.....

Don't worry, Cecil won't let his son miss out on a big payday.

this, sadly, is why I think he will declare.

uhh, I think you're confused. At least one of those three is above Newton on every single draft board anywhere...

Next year he'd have Luck (and Barkley, maybe others as crazynumbersdude points out) ahead of him but if he can improve his passing game suddenly he doesn't look like a "running quarterback." Then again, I doubt that he can really change that stigma. Heh.

Could you imagine Tressel trying to coach this guy into a pro quarterback like he is with Pryor? Haha.

Honestly, he may be the second QB behind Gabbert but that might put him out of the first round still the way some people are talking. I can't imagine it, but it's possible. The issue with Cam Newton is that a lot of people aren't sure he is anything but a running QB. If he can show in Monday's game on a national stage how well he can win with his arm, you never know.

I also don't think he need Auburn to have a magical season to increase his stock. Perhaps my view is clouded by the fact I've seen him late first early second lately, but I could see him improving that with actual focus on his passing game.

You guys are probably right though, with the other talent coming out he probably will bolt :P

i just don't want to see any more wrist cutting.

I don't think anyone here would really give a poo about anybody else in this draft not declaring. If Fairley went back to school I would actually be happy. He's OVERRATED......

    • I feel like this trade just lives rent free in people's heads and keeps morphing into different things. First thing is that the rumored trade was for future firsts. They wouldn't have any extra picks in 2023; the firsts would have been for 2024 and 2025. With very few exceptions, NFL GMs don't value picks that far away. You have to have a lot of job security to pull that off. Like Chiefs, Eagles, Rams kinda stability. That's obviously not the case with David Tepper, especially since he'd just fired his head coach. No GM except for like Howie Roseman is going to trade an asset you have now for a future asset you probably get to use.  Second, at the time you'd have to assume these are first rounders late in the first round. Obviously currency is currency and the panthers need young players, but these weren't slam dunk top ten picks. At the end of the day there's one pick that separates a first and second round pick.  Lastly, the only place that ever reported this trade was the Rams. All the reporters just repeated what McVay said and it became gospel. We have no idea how serious the negotiations were, if they ever really happened, if the offer was real, etc. And I personally believe McVay and Sneed are the kind of guys who would make up rumors like that to fug up other teams, mostly because I assume if I've thought of it someone smarter than me has.  I don't know how you'd call it the greatest draft haul of all time. Firsts quickly lose their value the farther out they are and Burns had 16.5 sacks last season. And anyway those picks would probably just been tossed into the burning inferno of the Bryce trade up so it's a moot point anyway.
