Beason's latest blog: "What we learned"

I might have to expect the FO to go BPA in the draft regardless of need and attack our needs through FA once they open up.. although, both could go hand in hand..

only way they could go I think..

this means Orton could be had for next year draft picks.. interesting, I think I might have to go troll this info.. ;)

You want to trade picks for Kyle Orton? Are you related to him in some way?

I believe the current CBA expires 3/1, so after 3/1 there will be no trades and there is no such thing as free agency until a new CBA is reached.

sweet.. that makes me feel better considering JR said nothing would happen on our end until the CBA is reached..

most likely the reason he said it then, because we can't anyhow..

anyone who doesn't think Orton is a solid QB hasn't looked at his stats in the last 3 years.. (Chicago included...)

they also thoroughly fail at realizing the situation we are in.. Clausen needs to sit the bench for 2-3 years and we need someone to play QB.. Moore could be that (a FA, so it's not a given he will be here), but Orton would be a much better option. he protects the ball and knows how to pass.

otherwise, you're looking at McNabb.. which I wouldn't be mad about either..

that was my understanding as well

And that is right..

But with Ron signed I would hope we would resign Johnson and Kalil before 3/1. Its going to be a weird draft when you do not know what your needs are.

I know with no new CBA we do not know the cap yet, but going into the draft with so many guys FA and not knowing if they are coming back is not really something i would like. Some shitty cheating team like the redskins will talk to FAs all over the league eventhough they are not allowed until a new CBA is done.

So worst case is that we lose all of our tier one FA like Davis, Johnson and Kalil the day that a new CBA is signed. We need to sign some of those guys to prevent the unclassy teams from cheating.

I bet we will have some back-door dealings with the FA's we want to retain and the contracts will be drawn up and ready to sign the moment the new CBA is reached.

I just want everyone on here to know that Brandon LaFell is the biggest douche bag on the Panthers. On Twitter he said "Who Dat?" to someone and I responded by saying "a Carolina Panther should never say "Who Dat" and then he tweeted me back and said "Don't get blocked!". I said "Wow you're cocky aren't you. Don't worry I'm unfollowing you right now. Learn how to catch the damn ball!" and he blocked me before I could even unfollow him. I'm not ticked because he blocked me, I'm ticked that this guy is so self-righteous that he feels I'm blessed that I'm able to follow him.

BRANDON LAFELL YOU ARE A DOUCHE BAG!

    • Congratulations do they know who the father is?
    • In my opinion Fitterer was probably right about not paying McCaffrey. Now not wanting to "pay RBs" in my opinion isn't something you want to set in stone, to me it all comes down to the individual.
    • Maybe I'm just not understanding, but everywhere that I have read says that signing bonuses go against the cap prorated by as much as five years. The following example uses Andrew Luck's rookie contract as an example. "Take Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck signed a four-year contract with the Colts worth $22.1 million and included a $14.5 million signing bonus. Rather than a $14.5 million cap hit in 2012, the Colts spread out his signing bonus over the life of his contract. The hit against the cap would be $3.625 million per year over four years instead of a direct cap hit of $14.5 million directly in 2012. This gave the Colts more leverage and cap flexibility in signing other players." https://www.the33rdteam.com/nfl-signing-bonuses-explained/ I don't know why some of you think that signing bonuses aren't counted against the cap over the length of the contract, but whatever.   "The bonus with a signing is usually the most garish aspect of a rookie contract. Bonus is the immediate cash players receive when they ink a deal. It factors into the cap, but only for the whole contract duration, in terms of salary cap calculations. In the case of Bryce Young’s $24.6 million signing bonus, that’s prorated to approximately $6.15 million per season over a four-year deal. This format allows teams to handle the cap and provides rookies with some short-term fiscal stability, which is important given the high injury risk in this league." https://collegefootballnetwork.com/how-rookie-contracts-work-in-the-nfl/ I understand how signing bonuses can be a useful tool in order to manage the cap, and as one of the article suggests, signing bonuses may become important if you have a tight cap, but the bill is always going to come due. I'm not necessarily referring to you Tuka, but it seems to me that others simply don't want to understand that fact which is why they're reacting to what I'm saying negatively. How odd. In any event, I have a better general understanding of why signing bonuses are used now, and it's generally to fit salaries under the cap. Surely players, whether they be rookies or not, love a signing bonus because they get a good portion of their money up front. This in turn gives them more security and probably amounts to tax benefits as well. I also understand why teams would not want to use signing bonuses, particularly for players or draftees who have a higher probability of being gone before a contract even ends.
