Pat Yasinskas on Cam Newton: Go get him.

I find it hilarious that people are knocking Cam for being a spread QB when Jimmy was hailed as the "pro-ready" QB and obviously has been so bad.

Playing in a pro offense is no guarantee of success.

But here's a quick question: How many successful starters in the NFL can you name that came from spread systems in college?

Brees, Roethlisberger, Flacco are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head. Are there any more?

There's The Golden Calf of Bristol, but is he "successful" yet? We'll see. Alex Smith would be the prime example of one that isn't succeeding. Others aren't even in the league.

Honestly, you might get some debate on whether what the guys you named ran was actually a "true" spread offense. Accepting those though, none of them was truly a "one read and run" QB in college. That, even more than offensive style, is what kills guys coming into the pros.

A spread guy can make the transition to the NFL if he can read a defense. Some schemes have that built in. Auburn's doesn't.

Can Newton make it in the NFL? Maybe, but he'll be a two to three year project at least. He essentially has to be rebuilt from the ground up by a pro-style coach.

You don't use the number one overall pick on a guy that's two or three years away from contributing at QB unless you're already set with a starter who's getting up in years.

That's not us.

Let's be clear on something though. There are options in the draft from pro-style offenses and guys who don't play in one-read-and-run systems.

I don't want them either :nonod:

We don't need to go into training camp with what amounts to three rookies as our starting options.

I like Cam but it's obvious he's a boom or bust type of guy. Clearly not the pick at 1 but at 9 or 10 I wouldn't mind. He going to be incredibly raw sure but he'll make enough plays with his feet to be effective early in his career. It's a fun debate but there's no chance Hurney would take him anyway.

to me it depends who the quarterback coach is and how confident he is in Newton's ability to adapt his game and refine the rough edges. If I sign a quarterback coach that I think can build Jimmy Clausen into a solid starter and he tells me that Cam Newton is amazing and that he can build him up to be a probowler, I'm going to listen to that.

Said before, and will say again...

I don't want any of 'em, in any round, at any pick :nonod:

Young prospects? We've got two of those already. Why get a third?

You really want to task a QB coach with trying to train what amounts to three rookies at once in four or five weeks of camp? That's a lot to ask

Give me two mid-level vets to go with the guys we have and I'll be happy.

We're not getting a franchise QB this year. Next year, maybe. This year? Best hope is a stopgap.

The team will pray that Clausen develops. And he may indeed get better, but good enough to be the franchise guy? Tall order :(

The one thing I want is for the FO to stop accepting mediocrity at the QB position. Give Clausen another shot next year fine but if he doesn't improve go out and take a risk and take a QB in the 1st round in next years draft. We're not gonna win many games in the NFC South without a franchise QB.

I think it's tough to judge a rookie QB whose development was overseen by a guy who hated developing rookie QBs.

I have no idea how good Pike is, or isn't, but I'd just as soon give him a shot under a new coach than throw yet another draft pick in the mix, or essentially throw Pike's draft pick away after one season with John Fox in charge.

(truthfully, you could make the same argument with Clausen)

Sign Volek, trade back in the 6th-10th range in the first picking up a second and fourth rounder.

With the first round pick take a QB (Newton or whomever the team likes the most)

In the Second Round take a DT - pick up another one in FA

in the third take a CB and an Olinemen/TE

in the Fourth take another TE and either a DT or kr/pr

Qb coach and OC goes into TC with 2 vets and 3 young guys.

(Clause, Moore, Volek, Draft pick and Pike)

Let the QB's battle for the starting Job, Keeping the Starter, Rooking and Clausen/Pike. Keeping the QB who plays the best between Clausen and Pike.

If Clausen some how manages to keep the starting spot, then you Keep Clausen, Volek, Rookie.

So the rookie would sit the bench for at least the first season and learn under the new QB coach and OC and have a good Qb teach in Volek.

If Clausen turns out to be the real deal then great, you have a trade peice that you could get a first rounder with from a QB needy team in the future.. If not you have that Rookie QB getting tought by a good QB coach and Volek for at least a season.

Not what I would do personally, but it could be an option for the team and it would take care of a few needs and give the Panthers some extra picks as well as a potential future franchise QB>

all I'm saying is that the next QB coach is going to have to have a vision for the QB position. that's what will get him hired. it's especially important in a year like this where as you say there aren't compelling QB prospects, particularly at the top of the draft or on the margins of free agency. if that vision includes molding a QB from this draft, then so be it. you don't feel too bad about dumping a 6th round pick from a previous flawed regime, no matter how much potential he didn't get a chance to show.

What Rivera wants is a franchise guy, and that's just not available in this draft. Nor can it be found in this year's free agent pool.

Why waste a pick on a guy in the hopes that you can "mold him" into something when there are expected to be more legit options next year (and not just Luck)?

Fill the other needs this year. Next year, do whatever it takes to get one of those guys.

And again, how are you making things worse? We've ALREADY got a bust QB. We're at the bottom of the tank dude!

Middle second round =/= First round pick.

When you pick someone like that in the first round, you're stuck with them for at least two-three years.

We draft Newton and he becomes the next Jamrcus Russel, we're not drafting another first round QB until at least 2014.

But while we're talking about QBs this year: we're probably not gonna draft one in the first round this year.

The only reason we were bailing on Clausen this year was because of Andrew Luck. He was a once-in-a-decade prospect. Still is. And if he was there we had to take him. Guess what, he's not.

We're probably gonna end up riding Clausen for at least one more year, or at least to start off the season.

We're not taking Cam Newton #1 overall. He's a monster athlete, don't get me wrong, but he just doesn't have a lot going for him. The organization may take a look at him, weigh his pros and cons. They'll also probably look at players who you can compare college careers with, Russel, Vick, Young. Not one of them is with tier original team (well, technically Young is as of now, but still...), and if he's really worth it.

It's not fair for anyone to say he's a bust, just in the same light it's blind love for anyone to say he's gonna be a elite QB. Just as it is to say the same about Luck, or any other QB/Draft prospect.

Drafting a QB this year is quite silly. Really give Clausen his last chance this year, if he sucks yet again, go with one of the actual proven passers in next years draft.

of course the Auburn coach will say he's the best, but scouts who judge him say Gabbert is the best, i am not on the Newton bandwaggon and honestly, if he played a better title game i might be on your side, but his title game showed alot of cons and that worries me.

Gabbert? Gabbert? What has he done? What has he won? Heisman totally overlooked that stud. Give me a break. Unimpressive.

The title game showed the guy has a lot of heart and a strong will to WIN.
