Do you think Rivera would have started Weinke in 2002?

This thought just occurred to me.

Rivera wants an innovative OC. He wants someone who will do more than score just enough to win, if the defense can get it's job done. This is in stark contrast to John Fox.

When Fox arrived in Carolina, his plan was to shore up the defense and then address the offense. As a stop-gap measure, he went out and got a strong game manager in Rodney Peete. Peete had been a great QB at one time, but at this point in his career all he could be counted on to do was take care of the ball and run a conservative offense. And the Panthers rode the defense to a 7-9 record that year.

So consider what Rivera may have done differently. From the sound of things, he's not interested in going conservative on offense while he tries to build a dominant defense, a la Fox. He wants to throw a lot (why hire Chud otherwise?), and he wants to be out of the box.

So are you expecting a Rodney Peete repeat, or would he have gone with Weinke another year, just to see what he could do with a little more freedom?

The thing to take into account this year is how much is the decision-making up to Rivera and how much is it Hurney. Remember in the press conference Richardson made a point to say in the past we asked the coaches what they needed and this year we are telling them what we need.

So the question is how receptive are they to getting someone in the draft or free agency versus sticking with Clausen and Pike and bringing in guys who can develop them into a franchise quarterback.

I think Rivera defintely plans on bringing in a QB to provide competition and said so in his press conference. The question is really who is in charge of the decisions at this point. It is shared like under Fox or has Hurney taken a bigger role in dictating FA and the draft??

I figure Chud's first job will be evaluating the roster and making recommendations for free agency and the draft.

another thing to think about is that rivera also said he wants defense to be his teams calling card. i expect some competition at qb, most likely thru free agency. chud's job is to create ways to run or pass the ball out of multiple formations & personnel. hopefully this makes us less predictable & more exciting(& produce more points)

when did he say all of this?

from what I heard he said he wanted to be balanced. I still expect us to run the ball and play good defense. I think some times people read way to much into what Rivera says because at one time Fox said the same things.lol

He used the words innovative in his first press conference to describe the offense he wants to run. I think I may have inferred the part about doing more than scoring just enough to win, or got it from JR's comments.

I also think I bungled the original question. In 2002 do you think he have gone more for a Tony Banks type (not great, but potential) and planned for competition with Weinke, or would he have gone with Peete to let Weinke sit for however long he needed to?

Oh, and check Chud's playcalling in Cleveland. VERY pass-heavy.

I will not be shocked to see Billy Volek in training camp. What that means, I don't know, but I do know that he has stated that he would at least like to compete for a starting gig, and that ain't happenin in SD.

If Chud runs Norvs O, and I suspect that he will run a version, Volek could be the stop gap starter for this team, better or worse.

I think the offense will play to its personnel at first and over time get players to fit what they want to do.

I think it's clear they are going to make Clausen compete for the job this year and Rivera will go with whomever wins that competition.

Agreed, and I think the competition will be a vet. We've already got enough youngsters.

Cyberjag's actually right. he did say he wanted to be innovative and attacking on offense.

As to his use of the word "balanced" he explained further that what he meant by that wasn't a 50-50 run/pass distribution. He wants the offense to be equally capable of passing and running so that they're free to attack opponents in whatever way works best. In short, we dictate the game rather than just reacting to the opponents.

As far as taking what Rivera says seriously, I do for one reason. His history backs it up.
