Validation for the Panthers personnel philosophy

you'll take a losing in a championship game over a trip to the super bowl...er ok. Ask around the league and see how much support you get.

saints won the superbowl last year with a free agent acquisition at QB, beating a guy that was drafted by his team...

drafting your own talent doesn't have as much to do with winning as people think. you could draft the best prospects out of college in every round, but if your coaching staff is poo then nothing good will come of it.

whether you draft or sign free agents, whatever, it doesn't really matter, everyone is trying to win, if your coaches are good enough, then you will win.

I think the ability to draft can be indicative of a staff's ability to evaluate any kind of talent. Your point about Brees is right on - they found their guy and nabbed him. That said, however, how many of their other contributors were drafted instead of signed? I think on the whole the best teams supplement their drafting skills with quality free agents, not the other way around.

that is true but it only makes sense that the majority of your roster would be guys that you drafted, you normally have a chance to add 7 guys to your roster every year through the draft.

you obviously didn't read my argument. I'm sorry you didn't.

I said that the saints won last year with a QB that they signed as a free agent. The colts lost with a guy they drafted. like KSpan said, you shouldn't strictly build through the draft, you should find complementary FA to really round out your team. it wins super bowls too.

Detroit Lions. A microcosm of why they've sucked for so long.

I guess it just boils down to your GM then. Millen sucked so they sucked. if your GM is good at both drafting and finding the complementary guys you will win.

matt millen is insanely funny on monday night football though i have seen him flip on steve young more times than i can count

We had the team building philosophy right already.

What we didn't have was the kind of coach who could build a consistently good system on the field.

The hope is that this issue is now fixed.

Yup, the draft philosophy only works if you have a coaching staff capable of developing those players... and as a whole I'm not sure we did.

We developed then slouched off on defense... We lost leadership but gained talent. There's a reason a Chris Harris defense in 2009 was better than the 2010 version. (Other than Peppers)

IF we get into the second round, we have to go need. We'd always gone BPA in the second round under fox.

    • It appears that he sees things differently than the QB and OC, so Cam's advice is spot on. It isn't about number of targets, it's about quality of targets. Trust and being on the same page. BY doesn't know how to anticipate what XL is doing. And XL doesn't like where BY is placing passes. One on one film study would go a long way. More for BY than XL though. He has to adjust to XL. I really don't think XL can adjust on the fly.
    • If the team shows improvement, then he shouldn't be in danger of losing his job - even if the record doesn't reflect. This was a very young team (with a lot of new vet starters) that overperformed last season. Somebody's doing something right. Consistency is key with so much youth. And we're potentially looking at new starters at ILB and FS. Those are positions that take time to fully understand the defense. ILB calls the front 7. Safety calls the back 4. Injuries at WR and IOL killed the offense last season. Depth needs to be upgraded. Same with Edge. I think they would have won more games if Pat Jones doesn't go down early. Be smart with the roster and draft. Trade players for assets when it's time to pay them more than they're worth - yes, that includes BY if he doesn't make a pretty big jump. That's one of the many reasons Tillis is as important as anyone to the future of this team.
    • He had heart surgery a while back he looks Fraile I hope he is okay
