Rate Our Offensive Lineman from Last Season

If you're up to it, list the best to the worst in a 1-5 order (you can add others that had playing time in the year)

I'm not that familiar with our offensive line and I really want to know why it sucked, and if specific people were responsible for the suckage..

Based on the last couple of seasons

Ryan Kalil

Jordan Gross

Geoff Schwartz

Jeff Otah

Travelle Wharton (very over rated)

Mackenzy Bernadeau

Garry Williams

Our issue is lack of experience, not ability. Williams got abused, Gross was much better than people on here want you to believe. Travelle had one good year a few seasons back and is living off that. Schwartz was very promising this season. Mack is a cereer back up, tons of effort but just doesn't have 'it'.

I think we most definitely have to keep Kalil. He's going to be the anchor of the line for a long time to come. Then, just get Otah healthy. Make sure he spends his off-season rehabbing his arm, getting into shape, and getting his legs back under him.

So, with Gross, Kalil, Otah, you've got three solid offensive linemen, spread out across the line.

/end of thread.

Kalil has been incredibly solid. If he maintains his health and consistency, he could be the best center the Panthers have ever had. Jordan Gross needs to grow a beard so they can be buddies.

I'm divided on Wharton and Schwartz. I think Schwartz might actually be the better of the two.

major problems last year with the line:

1) right side of the line was bad. otah was hurt and we didn't have a replacement for vincent.

2) playcalling and design pulled action into the middle. made holes for RBs nearly impossible.

3) lack of respectable QB and passing game caused defenses to get bold and blitz almost every down. they were bringing 8-9 defenders in most downs, while blitzing in 1-2 every time. blitzes were coming from every direction and it was just too much for 5 OL and a TE and an RB to block.

4) bad/inexperienced QB not being able to handle the pressure or read the field/defenses didn't help.

5) QB had no chemistry with the OL. made for a lot of false starts.

6) clausen had no chemistry with kalil

1) Disagree here, the line as a whole under performed, but Gross, Kalil and Schwartz played well individually.

2) This was a huge problem

3) Completely not true, we were not blitzed nearly every play, I think Clausen was blitzed around 40% of drop backs, which was pretty much the same as most QBs

4) Also disagree with this. Whilst I know it's subjective, Clausen was only credited with being responsible for 3 sacks and a couple of hurries, Moore was a similar. What I do think suffered was the pre-snap blitz pickups as we gave up a LOT of unblocked pressure

5) Again not true. Our OLine gave up 29 penalties, which was pretty much bang in line with the average of the league

6) This is a completely subjective statement and a bit of a head scratcher. If you are referring to the snaps, that was sorted by the second half of Clausen's season. If you are referring to the penalties, you can see above you weren't correct. If you are talking about blitz pickups, then that isn't a case for chemistry, rather it's down to experience. Regardless we had the same issues with Moore, Clausen or BSP under centre, not really sure of your agenda with this comment...

major problems last year with the line:

1) right side of the line was bad. otah was hurt and we didn't have a replacement for vincent. Schwarts improved, having to learn a new position by being thrown into the fire mid season. He sucked early on, but I think he improved enough to be seriously considered a starter there this season--I would still bring in a FA.

2) playcalling and design pulled action into the middle. made holes for RBs nearly impossible. Interesting point

3) lack of respectable QB and passing game caused defenses to get bold and blitz almost every down. they were bringing 8-9 defenders in most downs, while blitzing in 1-2 every time. blitzes were coming from every direction and it was just too much for 5 OL and a TE and an RB to block. It was tough to have respectable QB play when only 2-3 OL and no RBs were blocking, but the fact that defenses were blitzing means that JC had to perform in the worst possible conditions. Rookie QBs, WRs, scrubs on the OL, injured RBs.

4) bad/inexperienced QB not being able to handle the pressure or read the field/defenses didn't help. Because there was so much heat on the QB, JC was forced into quick reads and three step drops. CBs could jump routes knowing the QB had 2-3 seconds to get rid of the ball

5) QB had no chemistry with the OL. made for a lot of false starts.

6) clausen had no chemistry with kalil

I agree, and would like to add to these comments. in bold.

We could not have had a worse combination of injuries, youth, and poor coaching.

I used to coach OL in high school, so I know enough to be dangerous. But I can tell you that caused me to watch the OL more. So, for what it is worth, here is my estimation of the line.

Ryan Kalil: He really struggled early on. The problem had a lot to do with Bernadeau, but we faced aggressive defenses early on that were bent on blitzing our young QBs.

Travelle Wharton: At RG, he might be as dependable and solid as Kalil is at center. When he went down, Bernadeau moved over and did not play as poorly as he did on the right side. Reason? Wedged between Kalil and Gross.

Jordan Gross: He gets a lot of criticism, but he is solid. Sure he jumps the count on occasion, but find a LT in the league who does not. He faced some of the most feared DEs in the league this year, and he did very well. Gross is solid.

Geoff Schwartz: He was moved to RG after playing RT all season. He showed tremendous improvement, even being flanked by Williams to his right. I think Schwartz and Duke Robinson (yes, Duke) might just have the RG spot nailed down next season. Stay tuned.

Garry Williams: Not even a backup. I hope Otah is back and can stay healthy. However, I think we need to draft some developmental OTs late. Williams showed me that he has no future in the league. Sorry.

That is how I saw it.

    • To me the hype is coming from what I see this team is building. The offense is setup to have a good backup in every position. The way Bryce was reading defenses the last 8 games, gets you excited. now the defense, we all know what we had last year. Our defense is now is Horn,Mike Jack and the new guys including Brown. The defense is close to having quality backups in all positions. i am happy very few are hyping us. Our best years, no one hyped the Panthers. In my head it all depends how fast the defense comes together. And of course the injury bug could destroy any team.
    • I like my way better...
    • Same reason we get fired up about David Tepper being in involved in football decisions, neither of those two goofs have the first fuging idea what they are doing.
