Say we do draft Newton, what to do with bum ass Clausen?

Awesomeness!!

Hopefully we trade down to get Newton, pick up a few picks, and send Clausen away in the deal. Otherwise, I don't want him poisoning Cam Newton. If he doesn't get any takers, which is highly possible, I say just cut him, if a CBA is reached.

I can't believe more people haven't been discussing this topic already.

Good question.

I'm assuming we HAVE to pick up a veteran and that Newton will not be NFL ready for a while, maybe even a season or two.

In that case we have something like:

1) Veteran QB (Vick or Manning probably j/k)

2) Newton

3) Clausen/

4) Moore on the Practice Squad

I think we keep Clausen no matter what. See Mr. Scot's and others posts here:

Clausen isn't going anywhere, not this season anyway.

Doesn't matter whether we like it or not. He will get his chance with the new staff.

We likely won't be able to trade down to get Newton bc Newton might not make it past Buffalo. Their local press has been loving on him, they need to sell tickets, and want to become relevant again.

It is going to be either take him number one or don't. Their won't be much wiggle room with Newton. 6 teams have been reported to have Newton the number one player in the draft right now. His stock will likely go up as we get through the process. We are going to have to make a decision on what we want. IMO it will come down to Cam or Fairley. I think that it will be 50/50, but there is only a 30% chance of that.

    • No, you're right. It doesn't mean you can't call out his flaws and poor play. But it also doesn't mean you can't admit when he plays well and shows improvement. Not you personally, just in general I mean.
    • I will say, I do think there's a version of Bryce that could be really successful as a high-volume passer in a spread-based offense built around quick throws and timing-based intermediate throws with deeper throws schemed up around them. I actually think the power run based offense we're running is a poor fit for Bryce as it requires him to play under center far more often. It's a very traditional offensive approach whereas I think a scheme that spreads defenses out and lets Bryce distribute the ball quickly with anticipation and accuracy is the sweet spot for him. The key, of course, is to find a way to run the ball efficiently out of those formations. Our personnel right now (backs and OL) aren't good fits for that style of offense and I'm not sure it's a scheme Dave Canales favors very much either.
    • I root for him, and I hope for the best, as does essentially everyone. But that doesn’t mean you can’t call out flaws and bad plays. And that’s what a lot of people get wrong.  I hope I’m wrong and that he continues to improve a lot, I just doubt it. But I’ve been wrong before
