Bowers Had Torn MCL Surgery

oh if it was the meniscus then it's no biggie. I tore mine when I was 18, doctors said it would heal on it's own. it hurt like a bitch when i ran on it, but i still managed to play an entire season of baseball on it.

yes now that I know some dude on a messageboard who had the same injury was ok everything will be fine. Thanx ;)

Actually if it was the meniscus it is much worse depending on the severity of it. Regardless, it is much worse than an mcl. In the NBA guys like Greg Oden, Penny Hardaway, and now Brandon Roy have all started with such an injury and it led to microfracture surgery...

Deshaun Foster had the same problem and surgery. Patrick Jeffers career ended with meniscus injuries if I'm not mistaken. Not good, especially for a young DE that hasn't even played a down in the NFL yet.

It had to be bad if he had to have surgery.

nah, it all depends on whether it is a tear on the inner or outer part. i can't remember which is worse but it sounds like his was the not as bad one. surgery was an option for me but it was incredibly expensive so I couldn't get it. I had the not as bad tear too (oh yeah, dig my medical jargon?) and would have had to lay off any physical activity for about a week or 2, then i'd be back to normal within a month.

A meniscus tear is exactly what Otah had which was supposed to be minor surgery but extended throughout the year and he was put on IR. If they attempt to repair it by surgically sewing the tear back together it can take 6-8 weeks to heal and a few months of rehab. If the meniscus is torn to the point that they can't repair it, like a bucket handle tear, they remove the torn meniscus and the recovery time is much less. Of course the issue is that the meniscus is gone and you have bone against bone which eventually can cause arthritis and other joint issues down the road. The first repair is considered better in the sense the meniscus is preserved but the recovery time is longer. In the second case the rehab is much shorter but the mensicus is gone and can cause problems later.

But this is why some meniscus surgeries seems very short and the player returns in a few weeks versus what happened to Otah which dragged on for months.

Again, here's the only info out on this:

We have confirmed that Clemson junior defensive end Da’Quan Bowers, rated as the number two available prospect on our board, underwent minor knee surgery after the team’s bowl game to repair an injured meniscus in his knee. Bowers initially suffered the injury midway through the 2010 campaign yet played the entire season. No ill effects are foreseen and Bowers has been training full bore in preparation for the combine.

No one else is even talking about this. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
