Overall player rankings are going to change as the draft approaches. Up until recently, the rankings have assumed that a CBA would be in place on draft day. That is presumptuous.

The best evidence we currently have shows that CBA negotiations are going poorly. Neither owners nor players expect there to be a new CBA in place by March 3. So, let's assume the lockout happens, as expected. What is the likelihood that a CBA gets done between March 3 and April 23? Assuming the likelihood is slim, then teams will be drafting players without knowing when their rookies can begin training.

For QB's, the training schedule uncertainty, resulting from the lack of a CBA on draft day is an overall value-killer. Teams which draft an uncapped QB early will carry that economic burden into future years while others are drafting capped QB's. Without the expected (and perhaps inevitable) rookie cap, early drafting teams might be predisposed to defering an early QB pick for one year.

Conversely, players who represent a physical matchup problem for their position will be seen as safer picks, much more likely to start when the season does begin (with or without significant pre-season training), and less likely to command the high salary of a rookie QB in the final year before such contracts disappear.

Point is, no pre-draft ranking means much of anything without a CBA.

Just to touch on a couple of those things you brought up.

First and foremost Richardson will not sign ANY contracts until the CBA is completed. That includes whoever we draft and our current free agents, so the fact that there is no CBA will have no effect on who we draft.

The other thing I want to point out is that the fact there likely won't be a CBA, in my opinion, actually INCREASES the likelihood that we select a QB. The reason being that it is the only way we can control who we bring in to compete with Clausen.

If there is no free agency and no trading we no longer control our own destiny in regards to fixing the QB position.

For example, let's say that we don't select a QB because we want to go the FA/trade route. Then once free agency hits none of the top tier QB's in FA (not even sure there will be any) available want to play for a team that was 2-14 last season. The asking price for QB's in the trade market become too expensive, like two first round picks for Kolb.

Now all of the sudden you are at training camp with only Clausen and Pike on your depth chart. That would be disastrous.

That is why I feel a lack of a CBA will make it more likely we draft a QB.

I just watched Mel Kiper on my TV Screen say Newton was the best QB in the draft above Gabbert. His latest mock has Newton at #3 to the Bills (up 7 spots from his last one). He said he moved Newt up because of what he's hearing from his sources and NFL brass. Hmmm. Still 2 months to go til the draft...

you know i agree that he is, but i wouldn't be using kiper's endorsement as something to back it up.

kiper is wrong just as much as he is right.

Everybody rating Gabbert as the top prospect doesn't really convince me that he's a franchise QB though. Best available in this draft maybe, but that's not the same thing.

I Said Kiper had Cam as his number 1 QB on his big board which is exactly what the OP is telling you. I just told you ahead of time and Now it's coming to pass.
