Tender Kalil and Johnson?

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune makes a great point on Twitter. Rice may be a restricted free agent, given that he has only four years of service. Indeed, don’t be shocked if the Vikings apply a restricted free agency tender to any potential free agents with fewer than six years of service.

I am a bit confused about this. If this writer is accurate, then we could place first and third round and first round tenders on CJ and Kalil. Together, they would cost about $6.5 million for 2011 if not picked up. If one or both are picked up, we would receive draft picks--what year is the question.

Perhaps this is common knowledge, but I missed the memo. Can anyone with a little intel in this area enlighten a lost sheep?

At this point the idea of restricted free agency isn't in play only placing the franchise tag on players. I doubt the RFA tag will hold up given it was 4 years up until 2010 when it went to 6 years as a deterrent for not having a CBA. It is unclear at this point where the NFL stands on putting tenders on players.

If we are allowed to tender 4 year veterans, I would tender both Kalil and Johnson and tag Williams to trade him (better than letting him walk). Reason? You don't have to pay nearly $11 million for a center or $12 million for a DE with 1 good year under his belt (although I believe, at 24, CJ is the real deal). You would also have the chance to get something for DW. I don't think anyone would give us a first round pick for CJ or RK.

Hypothetically speaking, if we did lose CJ for a 1st and 3rd I wouldn't be broken hearted given the strength of the DL in the draft. Bowers 1st, and three 3rd rd picks. Or, there's another DE I like more than Bowers though his name escapes me at the moment.

Are you thinking of Quinn? The only downside is if the picks are given to us in 2012 because the draft could fall before free agency.

    • Gronk is the best TE of all time, but he also played with Brady. Clarke was great, but had Peyton and in an era TE's didn't make crazy money. Kittle is great, but the two times he's made the SB, he was still on his rookie contract for one, and the other the 49ers had Purdy on a cheap rookie deal which help them build the rest of the roster. So again, it's not about not wanting an elite TE, of course it would be nice.  But realistically, in today's NFL, unless that elite TE with a top end TE salary is on a team with a GOAT level QB and/or other serious cap savings (i.e. key players on rookie deals), then I think it's not a good use of cap space.
    • This place was the poo pre tepper with tons of hilarious posters like phillyB. Joined in the 2000s during the 07 season and have been here bitching about this team since. but yeah its sadly been dying a slow death, every time I come to this site I am surprised its still up. I think the 2015 season was the absolute peak, the Panthers and this board especially just haven't "felt" the same since then. Igo should really sell the board since he clearly doesn't care anymore. Also, Reddit blows and the Bryce defenders on there need Jesus.
    • Guessing the price is too rich here given the injury history.  2024 was brutal and production dropped off in 2025 with a few more injuries (albeit rough qb play).    Don’t really understand the narrative that Young can’t benefit from talented upgrades on offense. Especially here with respect to a tight end. Any QB will benefit from talented receivers that threaten the top of coverage and tight ends with skills to stress zone.    The age and injury history, coupled with what he’s likely asking, just probably means we can better spend that money elsewhere.
