I think Richardson was the most egregious in recent memory. He was so clearly nowhere near an NFL caliber QB. I will never understand how anyone could be fooled by that guy.

That's true.  You could at least pretend that Trey Lance would have done well at the highest level of college football.

His career 1.06 INT's a game would suggest otherwise. 5 dumb passes a game is very kind. TBH, it's probably closer to 15-20% of his overall passes are dumb or ill advised. It's just who he is.

I still don't agree with this philosophy. The "I THROW BALL COACH! I DO GOOD!" QB's are just not what I view as a long term solution nor a winning strategy. I can understand the want to move on from whatever Bryce is doing, believe me, I am in complete agreement on that.

I just don't view a potential increase in TO's to be worth the trouble. Also, I don't think this Canales offense is one that guys like Winston/Howell are really going to shine the best way that they can.

Doesn't have to be a long-term solution. Just had to be better than Bryce. I don't think we've really seen Canales' offense yet. This isn't what he ran in Tampa. I think Canales wants to threaten defenses vertically we just don't have a QB that can do it.

Its not what they did in Seattle either.

Hell, it's not what he did here when Bryce missed games his rookie year and old but not yet completely washed Dalton took the field.

That was Frank the tank though.  I don't know that DC wants to change his offense when another QB comes in.  He probably needs an offseason.  I think this thing is cooked up for what we have at QB and not what we want.

I don't really think they will functionally be better than Bryce. Especially in this offense.

Baker's IAY/PA were 8.5 in 2023. Bryce is at 8.6 in 2024 and 6.5 in 2025. Dalton is at 6.7 in 2024 and 9.5 in 2025.

So those numbers don't seem to indicate on the average that the targets are much deeper. I can take a look at 20+ passes/GM, if you want.

Ah yes, my bad. It's easy to forget those handful of games Frank coached. LOL

Per NFL NGS(can only gather data on the QB with the most snaps, so there will be a very small variance) for 20+ yard targets per game:

Baker(2023): 4

Dalton(2024-2025): 2.3

Young(2024-2025): 3

So there is a modest improvement from Young to Baker. Not sure one more target a game is what everyone is looking for. I didn't compare over success rate(I can do that, if desired). I would imagine that could change the difference quite a bit but, again, that's more on the QB and not so much the offense.

I still believe this IS the offense.

Derek Carr coming out of his 1-year retirement is my Darkhorse candidate.

Although I feel like a move for a QB worth anything is highly unlikely as Bryce is well liked and viewed as the teams unquestioned starter by his teammates.

We will probably see Mike White resigned and another JAG veteran backup brought in the replace Andy Dalton.

He was an option in 2023 that we rejected to trade the farm for the magic beans, if I remember right.

I don’t understand the point of Mayfield 2023.
what was he in 2024 and this year? Although losing Evans might cut this year back a little.
(scratch that 2023, I was off a year).

Two things, something like 1.5, give or take, more per game gives you in the range of 22-28 more over a season. Even 1 is 17 more shots.
And if you are successful on one or two of your three, you have established the threat as real, and can operate the near field more freely. Which besides the chance at a quick score, is the point of doing it.

Fair point. I do think he did very well the 1st half of that one year he started for the Saints when they ran a run/playaction pass type offense, which could fit in with our current style of offense. I still think Winston is capable of making any NFL caliber throw, which you won't see from any of the bottom half QBs. Dude just doesn't make smart decisions when the 1st read isn't open

The point is that from 2023-Present, Dave Canales was calling offensive plays. He was not doing so prior to that time period.

I am not against adding a guy like Winston/Howell but it would be in a three rostered QB scenario. Maybe take one of those guys and also a rookie QB.

That's basically the "darts at a dart board" strategy. Not against it.

    • Not sure who said it first, but Tepper is the correct answer. Still, I'm gonna go with Kasay keeping it inbounds. If, you subscribe to the butterfly effect version of time travel consequences.... When we win SBXXXVIII everybody's lives change: Moose never breaks his leg, We win it all again in 05. Tommy Jone is unknown and Peppers stays home, Champs once more 2008. No artificial pig heart turning JR into a creepy weirdo, no lockout, no Clausen. Fox and Jake ride off into the sunset on their own terms. No 2-14, no #1 pick. But, no laptop, no Blinn, 3 years behind The Golden Calf of Bristol, we still get Cam. JR let's him grow his locs like he always wanted, Smitty sees Cam in a new light. Dreads swinging, (and Smitty with his 3 Lombardis behind him) Cam is old enough to get those calls. No Manning narrative, Cotchery TD, PI against Talib on Philly Brown, 10,000 RTP calls and Kony Ealy SB50 MVP. No Jeans Fridays, no Tepper. KB doesn't slip on his own meatsweat mid-route in SD, Cam becomes the 1st QB to win 10 straight SBs. Retiring after being elected 47th president of the US of A, Cam ushers in the Permanent Proletarian Revolution across the globe, Xi Jinping bows in awe. "ẄøŘƙƐṛ§ őF ŧĤə ŵØRłð, ŮŊÏŦƐ!!!"
    • Yeah your right the owner was copping hand shandies while all this was going down
    • I mean not surprised the Patriots took him in and aren't trying to push him out. They've been the most morally bankrupt team in the NFL for a long while. Wouldn't be surprised if Vrabel has his own dirt on Kraft/Brady and other assholes from that organization over the last couple decades.
