Would you trade Derrick Brown to get a top QB prospect?

Yes, but no team in their right mind is trading a high draft pick for a DT unless you're also throwing in multiple firsts.

So, no.

If I had a top 5 pick and the Panthers offered me their superstar DT I'd call that trade into NFL HQ so fast your head would be spinning.

I mean the defense seems good enough to win now if they had a QB who would even remotely challenge a defense downfield

Do you know why the defence is good enough to win now with an even remotely competent QB?

I'll give you a hint, he wears #95.

If you're a GM with a Top 5 pick and you trade that pick for a 28 year old DT with a big contract, and nothing else, you're getting fired before that other team is even able to use the draft pick they got off you.

If there is a QB worth taking at that spot, to begin with, if you're picking in the Top 5, there is a good chance you need to take that QB yourself.  Beyond that, if you didn't, there would be multiple offers of multiple 1sts to move up to that spot.

If you're taking a 28 year old with a big contract over the multiple first round picks, then you're just an idiot.

This is no offense to DB, love the guy, but he's not an Aaron Donald type of DT who is racking up big sack numbers.  There is no world where he's worth turning down multiple first round picks (and probably other assets) to take just him back in exchange.

If someone is offering us 2 1sts and say a player, maybe another 2nd or 3rd round pick there too, for DB, I'm taking that offer so fast my head will spin.

Which is why no team is turning down that trade to take the offer of DB either.  Only chance would be if it's a team who lucked into that draft pick through a previous trade (like maybe the Rams with the Falcons pick) and they feel they are a Derrick Brown away from being the SB favorite that season, and even then, I'm not sure they turn down the draft picks based offers.

He's the absolute heartbeat of our D. He's a great player - and if someone is offering you magic beans for him then you absolutely take him.

Again, I'm not saying he isn't a great player and I'm not saying he isn't the heartbeat of our team.

But a team with a Top 5 draft pick would be better off just using the pick themselves than trading it 1 for 1 for DB.

That's still a true elite prospect who will then be on a rookie contract.

And that's before even factoring in, if there is a QB available there, there is a 1 million percent chance, someone will be offering a significantly better trade than just DB for that pick.

These aren't insults to DB, they're just objectively understanding the value of a Top 5 pick vs a 28 year old DT who's main role is as a space eater and run stuffer as opposed to being a pass rushing menace.

If you're not an absolute lock to be a 1st round pick, you should go back to school. Good college QBs that are mediocre NFL prospects are worth millions in the portal.

That's not it.  The top guys I had in mind would be 1st rounders.  Unlike years gone by, if you went back as a top guy it was an admission you weren't ready.  Now, with NIL, there's not a money grab hurry and guys are actually encouraged to go back to school (if eligible) to hone their skills more.

That being said, the '27 class went from being pretty damn good to absolutely loaded.

    • Btw... only Mitch fugging Marner has a better +/- than Key 🔑!!! And, Mitchy needed 5 more games and almost 100 more shifts to get there.
    • I was honestly flabbergasted to see Rod send out Stanky and the boys to to matchup against their top line to start the game. The reason that line has been so effective is because they've been matched mostly against 2nd and 3rd lines all year. You've got last change. Use it to your advantage.
    • Nobody played well on defense last night. But, the vitriol towards Chatfield (and to a lesser extent, K'andre) is bigly misplaced. People (not just you) just refuse to accept how bad Slavin has been this season. And, I get it. Canes fans (and informed analysts) have spent nearly a decade trying to explain to casuals just how good Jaccccob is at hockey. 4Nations happened and the hockey watching public started to listen. National media even started floating the idea of creating a new award in his honor. Then this season, he gets hurt. It happens. NBD. But, when he finally came back, it wasn't the same. He'll get back to his old self in no time. Probably just some rust, it'll be fine. Only, it wasnt rust, and he's not fine. He's bad right now. It wasnt just last night. Although, that was absolutely the worst game of his NHL career. Slavin (-4) currently has the 3rd worst +/- of anyone left in the playoffs. We've  been begging the world to recognize Jaccob Slavin's greatness. And, by the time we finally got people to listen, he shits the bed! I blame Kash!
