Charles Davis on WFNZ

Charles Davis is a very smart man. The Panthers should hire him as a scout.

I think Davis and Mayock make a good team. WHen I watch the NFL network, I try to igore everything Jamie Dukes says. He states the obvious and is arrogant about it. He tries to tell Belichek, Lombardi, etc, how to spot talent. A head coach and GM on the set, and Dukes does 75% of the talking.

Duke: (when discussing potential QBs) "Looking forward to seeing (Jake Locker) run the 40."

Why? You know he is fast.

Then he breaks down the difference between Dareus and Fairley.

Dukes: "(Fairley) can play the nose, a three and a five technique...He has long arms."

I have not read anywhere that he can play the nose and most people are saying he is a 4-3 three technique, period. If you think he can play the nose or the five, explain why. Am I wrong here? Has anyone else heard that he can play the nose (or 5 tech for that matter)?

I don't know what Cam has done to make anyone think he wouldn't take time to watch film and learn footwork?

He obviously has worked hard to get where he is today. I think the character issues, comments, the fact that he felt ready to come out as a Junior when he only had 275 or so D-I passes, etc. I think people still have images of Jamarcus Russell looking like a diamond-studded Christmas tree getting out of his gold Escalade.

If he shows them he can read a defense and handle advanced chalk talk, then he will be the Panthers pick.

Since everyone knows that the Panthers could use a qb, it will be interesting to see what happens to him if Carolina and Buffalo pass on him. Arizona could go with Kolb, and I don't see SF, Tenn, or Washington taking Newton for various reasons (Harbaugh's offensive complexity, VY comparisons, Washington's offense). Dallas at 9 makes not sense, but maybe JJones will not be able to resist the media attention that picking CN would bring him. Cam could drop to Miami at 15 or even Jacksonville. Doubt it, but

Mayock says Fairley can play every spot on the DL, but I didn't hear an explanation.

Dukes didn't give one either.

I don't see him at Nose. He is tall and under 300. he is a gap shooter, no 2 gap tape that I have seen. I am learning though. You could argue a 1, but you have to take on double teams nearly every play. I didn't see him doing that at AU, but that doesn't mean he can't.

There is a very big difference between someone who is willing to practice and play vs someone who is willing to put in the extra time it takes to excel and become a champion. Anyone can work hard, very few have what it takes inside to be the best.

How can you guarantee that with any player though? It seems that people are scared to death that Cam is lazy, when there is no evidence that's the case. In fact, there is some pretty good evidence out there that he was indeed a very hard worker and cares very much about winning football games. So why all the doubt?

I can understand the concern for the off the field stuff, that he only played one year in div. 1, and he wasn't a pro style QB, but I don't understand the assumptions that he will refuse to put forth the effort to be the best he can be, when everybody who has been around him says that he was a hard worker and a great leader.

Although his comments lately have not seemed so, his teammates have described him as humble. All the "icon" talk may have very well come out of his Underarmor meetings before they made him a millionaire.

You can't. That's why the draft is a gamble, even with an assumed 'lock.' Our FO has to do their due diligence and try to get as good a read on his personality as possible through personal contact, and not be swayed by hype and highlight reels. I'm not doubting, just withholding judgment until the kid has a change to prove he's one way or the other. I feel that way of all prospects/rookies, including Pickles and Edwards. I will be happy with whomever we pick at #1, or if we trade down. Hopefully they will pan out. If they don't, you move on and try again.

Fair enough. There are plenty of people who seem to have already made up their minds that Cam won't be willing to work and get better though, and I don't understand why, since the people who actually know him, have nothing but good things to say about his work ethic and will to win.

I hope that is truly the case. He could end up being quite a player.

A lot of people I guess missed this

Ziemba remembers seeing Newton over the summer. Players put a great deal of stock in how hard a teammate works when there's no coach forcing him to do it.

"He was in the rain, throwing passes on the weekend when we were at the lake," Ziemba said. "He was dragging receivers out there with him. That kind of work ethic prepared our guys to follow him."
