Understood, and lots of rookies at various positions need almost remedial training these days.

There are guys who pick it up within a year or two though.

I think that is the difference between elite guys and JAG's(or worse). The elite guys are better able to make those adjustments quickly.

Certainly, one can argue that development can be hindered by the team/franchise but the cream does fairly consistently seem to keep rising.

Hence, why smart teams look at player intelligence, maturity, work ethic, character, etc.

It's reasonable to expect a guy who's a little older to be higher in those areas, but again Father Time is undefeated.

You've theoretically gotta pick between a guy who may or may not take a little longer to catch on vs a guy who could catch on sooner but also may have a shorter career.

One of about a thousand reasons I'm happy I don't have to make those decisions...

Eh, even if Shough takes 2-3 years to adjust, you should reasonably expect him to provide at least a decade of solid play IF he pans out. That puts him in his mid-late 30's which is increasingly when a lot of these guys seem to be exiting their useful years.

poo, sign me up for that.

I'd sign up for that. Some NFL teams probably would too but others obviously wouldn't or he'd have been drafted higher.

I don't really know enough about his durability to say how long a career he could have, though.

Yeah, I am not saying I thought he was a strong prospect by any means. I generally didn't think too highly of him(nor this QB class overall).

He has, to date, far exceeded my expectations for him in year 1.

I did.  I kinda hoped we'd pick him up. Being Bryce's backup wouldn't have been a bad situation for him (and certainly could have been good for us).

What hurts though is understanding that we didn't so much pick Bryce over him as we did Andy Dalton 😕

Through 6 games this guy is 2-4, averaging 202 yards a game with 7 touchdowns and 7 turnovers. His AY/A (5.91) is worse than Bryce (6.31), as are his yards per completion (10.1 vs 10.2).

He's worse than Bryce in basically every category except for yards (he's averaging 202, Bryce is averaging 195 this year) and completion percentage (65% vs 63%). Oh, and he's losing two-thirds of his games (2-4).

You can't think Bryce is a bad QB and that Shough is good.

he is 2-3 as a starter

in his starts he is 67% at 216 per game.  That's as a freaking rookie on a bad team vs a 3rd year guy with a pretty solid group around him.

you got to separate out starts vs the pure per game average because a game with like 2 pass attempts and zero yards completely fugs up the per game stats and doesn't give you a good luck.

Bad team overall perhaps...

...but I'm not so sure I'd put our skill players (other than McMillan) and our MASH unit of an OL over theirs right now.

    • Dude, you're kinda comparing apples to oranges. What Elway did and what Eli did were different than what Shedeur did. Shedeur did not publicly demand anything. It was through back channels and was more like a request. The Ravens understood and honored it. But even if you consider it entitlement (which is debatable regardless if you want to admit it or not), it was to a much lesser degree. After sliding, Sanders really didn't have any leverage whatsoever.  As for his attitude you can obviously believe what you want, but it has been widely reported that Shedeur's attitude has been great since being in the league.  Opinions about what he is, will become or won't become is getting way ahead of ourselves. I prefer to just wait and see what happens. He's young and has had a pretty good start. Highlight-reel-plays aren't a bad thing. I'm not invested in trying to pull the kid down. I realize that just like any other QB that has been drafted into the league, it's hard to say what they will become unless you see an appreciable body of work. Three games ain't really it. I'll withhold judgment on what I believe he can become after I see more.
    • I'm not cherry picking metrics.  I'm ignoring all of them. There are things about a player that stats are never gonna tell you. And there are things you might think stats tell you that are actually wrong. We've been talking about Howell so I looked up his stats for last season with Seattle. In the two games where he played, he had a completion percentage under 36 percent and his overall quarterback rating was in the mid teens. Should I consider those things valid for evaluative purposes?
