Film on Panthers defensive failure. Same scheme issue over and over

Recommended Posts

@cranky   Augmenting your offensive analysis    Saints figured out panthers D

Sad   Just sad     The panthers need a new DC.

Many takeaways but here is the 2 biggest.
One  nickel routes, the coverage of the nickel back on offensive slot receiver tells offense that the out routes will be wide open.   Ie. Get nickel back to sit and the other 2 DBs rarely challenge and are yards away leaving wr wide open   The same concept on screen plays

Two. continued positional issues in a defense that is run over and over

It's amazing how much they have improved and yet how bad they still are.

I personally never liked this scheme so I would be happy to watch it leave with Evero. I'm fine on thr 3-4, don't think the roster is closer to 4-3 either. Worst case Evero stays next year, best case he goes and does a 3 year meh build out somewhere else.

I was about to say that we are helping him any by using our top picks to prop up Bryce, but didn't he want DJ Johnson?

Yes and some of the free agents he bought in, questionable

it is just not working with Evero. Having one or two defensive impressive games a year, isn’t enough and to be frank, most of those times it was those teams beating themselves

they need young, incentive and aggressive in their DC , not passive most of the times and aggressive at inopportune times

Evero runs his scheme. Personel or opponents be damned. I'm so tired of it, it works when you have a great pass rush but if his dumbass hasn't figured out our guys can't rush the passer then he probably can't figure out how to tie his shoes

My guess is he won't be back next year but this also looks like a ton of blown assignments or dudes just having no clue where to be or what's going on. That's on coaching too, don't get me wrong, but it's also on having bad players.

3 years in so the bad players are still his guys at this point...

Here’s another i didn’t know until watching some of the film reviews

they had Derek Brown dropping back inpass coverage on the penalty he received by hitting Shough

in what world do you have your best interior lineman doing that

It's called strategery, try it some time.

    • Good game so far.  Solid trench battles, two young well built defenses, and my 2 fave coaches.  Stafford is really damn good.  SEA OL is overperforming.
    • Okay then. To me that means Russell Wilson was Coryell. Because I see the proposition completely in the Russell Wilson punt/pass put it up for grabs mold. Count on the receiver to catch it or knock it down.    And the reason I thought that was the intent with Legette is the abysmal downfield game from 2023. As in, there was barely any.   I look at it as if… the result of a deep attempt isn’t as important as the opponent understanding they have to defend it. So I was all for some 50/50s. Coryell, Walsh whoever.  I do favor the Coryell approach personally but also very much value versatility, it doesn’t have to be strict. Just make the defense defend the whole field, however you do it. It has to include downfield throws.
    • Sold, or in the process of being sold. Could be either way. Consider this for a second... Last season, our defensive coordinator steered what many have called the worst defense in NFL history.  Canales would absolutely have been justified in firing him, and no one would have blamed him if he had.  But what did he do? He gave Evero another chance to come back and prove he could be better. Does that tell us something about Canales? I think it does. Now apply that to Bryce 😕
