The more interesting story re: Shockey

If I am not mistaken, this is the first FA the Panthers have brought in this offseason.

What do you think that means in regards to JR feeling the CBA will get done? Do you think JR would spend money to fly someone in if there was no chance of a deal being done soon?

You're talking about flying someone in for a couple hundred bucks? That's like one fifth a PSL owner. Peanuts. JR tanked a season becasue he believed there would be no deal. I don't believe even he knows what he is thinking half the time. It's natural, advanced aging.

The money is not the point. The fact that he is bringing him in may or may not tip his hat as to the predicted outcome of the CBA.

I find that interesting as well.

If you don't find it interesting you need to be put back in the oven, you're not done yet.

LOL I don't think it means anything. The negotiator says they are far apart, the NFLPA is planning to de certify and that will end up being the end of them and screwing the players, so no I don't think it means anything.

I think we get a good/ solid all around TE which Rivera wants. It shows me he realizes how important TE is and they are serious in getting one.

Shockey was released early last week. The Panthers could have flown him in immediately when the entire coaching staff was there to speak to him. Its not like they didn't know enough about him to know if he was a viable option. Easy decision.

But for some reason, over the last few days there is all of a sudden a need to get him in quickly even though the entire coaching staff is not present? Also, during those few days there have been arbitrated CBA talks happening.

Could be nothing, sure. But sounds to me something is up. You assume 600 bucks is nothing to JR, but that just means you don't know much about JR. Every dime counts.

Could be a strong desire to get something done before the 4th. Is the decision a reflection of a looming compromise, or a sudden sense of urgency because none is forthcoming?

If none were forthcoming, then it will be several months until you would get the opportunity to speak with him. At that point, would you not need to have him come in again to speak with him to make sure he has kept his conditioning up to snuff in a shortened camp year? So why is a first trip even necessary?

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
