Good comment on Gettis/LaFell's stats & production from last year

Recommended Posts

I was reading Yasinskas's article on espn.com about us being not likely in drafting Cam Newton, which I agree on, but a fan made a great comment towards Gettis/LaFell working together from last year:

I also looked up both Lafells and Gettis's stats. For two guys who basically had no one to throw to them, they both still put up compartively decent numbers. Gettis had 37 catches, 500+ yards and 3 TDs. Lafell had 38, 468, & 1 TD.

.

Now compared to say higher draft picks like first rounders Thomas and Bryant: Thomas and Bryant - 22 games, 67 catches, 844 yards, 6 TDs with QBs Romo/Kitna and Orton. Now Gettis and Lafell - 29 games, 75, 976, 4 with Moore/Clausen/Pike etc etc as the QBs. Looking at the bigger picture, it seems to me that both Gettis and Lafell did pretty darn well all things considered. Incredibly worse QB situation, conservative playcalling, and having to learn how to sneak around as to avoid the hourly Smith beatdown.

I say sign a decent FA QB to start next year & teach Clausen how to play like an NFL QB & not let the fear get to your head.

P.S. The Bears just released DT Tommy Harris. Would it be a good idea to sign him for a year or two?

Edit out everything after the P.S. and you have a post full of win, and I would cosign everything you said. Considering this time last year all of us were clamoring as our biggest need being WR, we've gotten stacked with potential in a short time.

Makes the loss of this years second hurt that much more though. :(

I love our young WRs, and I think they did great considering the problems you listed above. Now if Armanti Edwards can put it together next year, this years draft will end up being one of the best for the Panthers in our short teams existence. LaFell improved every week and by the end of the year he looked like he could be a great NFL Wide reciever. Not to take anything away from Gettis who also had a great rookie season and I have no doubt he has what it takes to be good but LaFell has more potential that Gettis.

I would love to see us trade Smith and draft Green, then we would have a very young WR group that could dominate for years. The only reason why I don't think Green is a must draft is because we don't know what AE can do. If AE can learn to play WR then we won't need Green.

Edwards should be fine. Project players don't see the field much in their rookie seasons. He gets a pass. It's not his fault we gave up the 33rd pick for him. He shouldn't be judged on that. I'm also not an App state homer, seeing as how I don't even know where App State is, nor do I know how to spell appalatian...

Not to take anything away from them, but it might be more insightful to see the number of snaps they played compared to others. We were relying on them pretty heavily, more than most rookies I think. Catches don't tell the whole story there.

Still great job by them though.

We can take the number of snaps, and consider who was throwing the ball, and we can call it a wash...

Please explain why LaFell has more potential than Gettis. He isn't bigger. He isn't faster. He doesn't have better hands. He certainly doesn't seem smarter (OOOH WEE MAYNE) In my opinion he doesn't run better routes either. RAC is arguable but leans toward Lafell. IMO Either way i'd be willing to bet that Gettis has the better career. Short and long term. But to be fair Im soured because of all the big catches he dropped in college. He seems to have improved greatly but I said after the draft that Gettis was a future #1 and I'm sticking with it.

Gettis could have had 3 TDs in 1 game except he dropped a pretty easy one. I am excited about the future for these guys. I really hope they both improve a lot this next season but I still wouldn't mind having Green, but it won't really matter if Clausen doesn't improve a lot.

Having Green is a Luxury that would be awesome at this point, but I'm not sure we can afford to spend a #1 on a luxury. That being said, Gettis and Lafell both look great, and Edwards deserves another look (quick pause while I light myself on fire... "you don't draft a QB turned WR in the third... you don't draft a DII WR in the third... you DEFINITELY do NOT draft a DII QB turned WR in the third... oh help me" ok, back). Smith isn't done, and I'd love to see him retire a panther... having Green would be sick though.

    • I can say that I have defended Canales because I get that they are doing all they can to keep from looking like idiots for drafting Bryce, from the trade up to signing $150m guards to drafting XL and Brooks etc---nothing seems to work.  And Hiring Canales was part of the Bryce Young rehab program, so so he can't really decide to "move on."  That has to come from Morgan and Tepper. Personally, I think Bryce is due for an injury.  He is small, he is not thick, and he has been a LOT more healthy than most any other QB has who has endured so much pressure.  The thing that bothers me is this---Bryce really does not go through his progressions quickly.  He locks on to his presnap read and stays locked onto him for too long--he seems to fail to anticipate the WR/TE's positioning on the play before the cut--for example, if the WR is running a dig and the CB has his back to the inside of the field, he should be open for a second or less just after the cut.  He seems to wait until the cut has been made before deciding, then checking down quickly while moving in the pocket. OL:  There seems to be a lack of communication--is that on Mays?  Watch this team presnap--they seem a bit confused at times.   I can almost predict the success rate of the play by watching the center and QB before the snap.
    • Anyone else remember back in 2010 when Fox piloted having music under the in-game replays during one of Carolina's games? Not the commercial bumpers but the actual replay clips that the announcers would talk over. Pretty sure it was vs the 49ers. And it was terrible. Point being, Carolina continues being so bad that we get the networks trying things out during their games.
    • Is it bad I found this video more hilarious than pathetic? I am still laughing at that one play where half the people on the field ran into each other and Bryce still couldn't see Chuba wide open... Also laughing at Cade blocking nobody and somehow losing his cleat Man this offense is a poo show
