Drafting a QB #1 is a Smokescreen

IMHOP (free pancakes) the Panther's are letting the entire NFL know that they are looking for a franchise QB, so that the value of the #1 pick rises. If Arizona, Cincy, Washington, San Fran, ect. believe that the Panther's will use the #1 pick on a QB, then they are more inclined to trade up to the #1 spot.

First, and the funniest part is ESPN and the mock draft geeks aren't buying it. ESPN doesn't even show the Panther's as a team in need of a QB during their" Teams in need of a QB" segment. Why? Rivera has clearly stated it's our goal to find a franchise QB.

Second, Matt Moore was tendered. This is a huge deal and shouldn't be overlooked. You have to know that he accepts this tender and then the Panthers are going to have to keep him on the roster or cut him. Why tender Matt Moore? It really is baffling if you are going to draft a QB with the #1 pick.

Third, the Panther's are actively looking at FA Qbs. You have Clausen and now Moore, so why look at FA Qbs if you're going to draft a QB #1? Four QBs, plus Pike? What happens to Pike?

Fourth, Richardson said the Panthers intend to use the #1 pick, which indicated that Luck was "our" guy. Luck dropped us like a bad habit. There is not a QB that's even near Luck in this draft. If Richardson was so set on Luck that I don't see any other QB in this draft replacing that choice. Richardson wants to trade this pick now and the only way he can do it is to pressure teams that are desperate for one of the 2 top QBs.

let's start a smokescreen about needing a DT or RG next then....that will really throw teams off.

if the Panthers were going to throw a smokescreen they would be pimping Patrick Peterson or someone like that......telling the league they will ignore all their HUGE holes b/c this kid is just THAT good and rare of a talent.

except no team would ever jump to the first pick to take a cb.....ever

There is a chance we go into camp with FA/Moore/Clausen/Rookie and keep the rookie and the best other 2. I just highly doubt that.

I don't think it's really a smokescreen exactly, we DO need a QB, we just probably won't find it in the draft.

I'm sure they are pimping every potential #1 pick that would be worth trading up for, but my point is, IMHOP (free pancakes), the Panther's have NO intentions of drafting a QB #1. The only reason the thought is in any one's head is because they are pimping their need for a franchise QB, which may or may not force one of the 2-10 teams to trade up and secure the #1 spot so that they don't miss out on one of the top 2 QBs. Almost every team in the top 10 picks needs a QB, so the Panthers are making it look like 1 of the top QBs will be gone, if a trade doesn't occur.

no team is going to trade up to number 1 for a QB, and the panthers aren't trying to fool anyone.

the fans and media are drooling over 2-3 QBs in the draft, but the fact of the matter is this draft is deep in quality QBs. so deep that a good one can be picked up as deep as the 3rd round. all of them have question marks, and all of them are projects. so what's the purpose of reaching for one first overall?

First of all.... you could be EXACTLY right. This isn't outside the realm of possibility.

But Moore being tendered may be a signal that we are going to draft a QB. No matter who we draft at QB he is going to need time to transition and will likely sit for as long as possible.

By tendering Matt you avoid having to sign a vet QB from FA that would likely demand a multiple year contract. If you draft a QB you can develop him for a year and move him on up the depth chart after the year when you let Matt walk.

If you draft a QB, have Clausen under contract 3 more years, and sign a vet FA to a multi year contract you may bury your draft pick behind these guys for longer than you want to or cause a divide in the locker room if Clausen or vet is playing well and you want to start your draft pick.

So the fact we tendered Matt could mean exactly what you said or the complete opposite so it is hard to read too much into that.

I'm not sure what FA QB we have talked to but they are looking at the market bc we probably aren't even sure we are going to do on draft day yet. If we don't draft a QB they may still look to FA to try and shore up the QB position.

And the trading down to a team desperate for a QB always sounds nice except when you think about it, WE are desperate for a QB. And if turns out that there is a QB worth the pick it would take a ton of picks to get us off the guy.

If they think a QB is worth being drafted in the top 5.....then imo they have legitimate thought of drafting one #1 overall. It is too big a hole for Carolina and the position has too big of an impact on literallly everyone else on the field.

No not yet. But if he doesn't don't we still own rights to him. For instance can he not sign and walk into FA?? I don't think he can. I think his options are sign the tender or don't to try to get a better deal but I don't think he can just walk.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

What about this does nobody seem to understand? "smokescreens" don't work when you have the number one overall pick. Why would a team trade up WITH us in order to PICK the player WE made them think WE really wanted????

A successful "smokescreen" only really works when want a particular player to fall to you. For example you tell people you want player A so everyone ahead of you knows that player A won't go past your position. This makes them not consider player B who you actually want.

Also, why would we start a "smokescreen", however unrealistic, two months before the draft? No pro days, no personal interviews...come on guys. This isn't a conspiracy...it's not a ploy...the Panthers need a QB and are looking at newton and gabbert. That's it...nothing more nothing less.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
