Rivera Hitting Road For Newton

Before the 2009 playoff blowup by Delhomme, he was one of the most clutch Qbs in the game. Yeah he threw some horrible ducks, but he always found a way to win....between the surgery and the Cardinals, Delhomme became a turd.

Every once in a while NFL network shows the Philly, St. Louis, and Super bowl vs New England and I am amazed at how good Delhomme/Smith/Moose were. Jake is probably the best acquisition this team ever made, with Stephen Davis being a close second.

Imagine you are RonMart (Ron Rivera, Marty Hurney) for a spell, as if that is not all we do here. The Panther's need to take a long look at Newton because his performance in the NFL, whether we take him first or not, is how RonMart will be measured.

Bill Polian is highly respected. Imagine if he took Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning. Many thought they were even at the time.

Bobby Beathard really had no choice because they picked second. However, his legacy is horribly scarred by the fact that he took Leaf.

Rivera and Hurney's success in this draft will be measured by Cam Newton's career, whether it is here or somewhere else.

I think they better take a good, long look at him. BTW, Gabbert's pro day is tomorrow too.

Polian and Hurney's names shouldn't be in the same thread, much less the same post. It's like putting a porshe in the same class as a kia.

I agree. I would put Delhomme #1, easily the best pickup. Kasay, Mills, etc. imo are ahead of Davis.

Yep. Davis really solitified the running game and made Henning look like a genius.

I moved to South Florida 5 years ago and Henning is in Miami now running his stupid draw plays and wildcat on 3rd and 8.....it's hilarious to watch a game here in South Florida...it will make you laugh. The only positive thing about a Miami game is the freaking hot latinos in bikinis all over the stands....I spend more time looking sideways and backwards than I do watching the fish.....

Someone needs to brief Rivera that he's showing too much interest in the top QB prospect. We have to leave the illusion that we're not interested in QBs to keep the anti-winning folks around. He's gonna offend someone and make them mad and end up being called a "nut hugger".

Would you think that if he drafted Leaf? Illustrates my point.

Yes. He built the Bills who were dominate in the late 80s and early 90s, the Panthers who came out of the gate strong and made the NFC championship game, then he built the Colts who have had one of the best records in the NFL since he arrived.

Who is to say that he would have taken Leaf over Manning. Lucky for him he didn't have to make that choice.

I'm hoping Hurney doesn't choose between QBs this year, because there isn't a Manning in the draft. We should take Peterson at 3-5 and a second round pick from who ever is willing to give it in exchange.

I am guessing the defense there had a little to do with those wins, but I think he is a fine QB.

The one I don't get is Sanchez. I think he stinks. A solid QB in NY and they are donning jewelry right now. I guess environment and supporting casts are important. Who would have thought that?

If a guy who is averaging 23 tds and 11 int's that last two season isn't considered a successful QB than i am not sure what is.

I'll give you Sanchez he is still a enigma and i am not quite sure about him. But it is pretty safe to say Flacco is in the top half of the QBs in this league. i consider that a success.

and for the record, not everything is a smokescreen, most of you use this term so loosely that you are forgetting that their our 7-10 players that the Panthers are targeting with the #1 pick, how that is a smokescreen baffles me. Fact is, we seriously need a QB, I don't get why Newton or Gabbert are not in the mix according to you, because YOU think they are not worthy of the #1 pick? We really don't know who is really worthy of the #1 pick

If there were ever a GM who I trusted to have an eye for talent, it is Bill Polian. Most fans agree.

Concerning Hurney, I am not a big fan. I think he has taken safe picks and not gone after a franchise QB like he should have. He neglected WR (Moose and Smith were not his picks) and DT as well (Ellison, Haye, Hayden, Irvin? Really?). These three positions are crucial. Sure Beason was a good pick, and DW, and maybe Gross and TD. But when he started trading away first rounders....

The positions Hurney drafts in the first round are a bit easier to assess than other positions. Give him credit for being successful with the picks, but his vision of the future and his inability to land core talent in three critical positions will always cause me to be critical of his approaches to the draft.

Hurney supporters will argue that he has good success in the first round. Safe picks. He tends to draft the fallers like Hardy, Jarrett, Norwood, Pike, etc.

In a nutshell, Armanti Edwards for the 33rd pick in this year's draft. Inexcusable.

I don't know if you are referring to me but I have been doing it as a running joke that every time some sort of info about the draft comes out I question if it is a smoke screen. I want the Panthers to pick Cam. It is just a joke. :)

    • You're assuming just as well.   Morgan and Canales were hired 3 days apart.  I believe it was partially due to their connections in Seattle.  i believe Tepper wanted some familiarity with his GM and HC.  It is so easy to sit back and arm-chair QB over draft picks.  You don't know what the philosophy was going into the 2024 draft.  I believe Canales and Morgan were drafting for the future.  XL and Brooks point to that philosophy. Name me one GM that is 100% on draft picks.  Just one.  You're not going to find one.    I think year one picks weren't for what can you do for me now but Potential.   XL hasn't lived up to the hype of a 1st rounder.  I think we all can agree on that. However, there still is hope he comes around.  What I believe they saw in him was his speed after the catch.  He needs to get more consistent but when he gets the ball you kind of hold your breath just a second because if he gets free, he's gone.  The Brooks pick was a signing for the future, and no one could have guessed he would re-injure the same ACL.  This makes the pick look bad but Dallas was ready to draft him later that same round.  IMO we'll have to see what happens next season before we can call this a bust. Wallace has improved each season and for a third rounder has done well.  Sanders has shown flashes and considering the pick in the 4th round it wasn't a bad pick.  His sophomore season IMO was a little bit more productive.  Smith-Wade has been a good addition and has played well.  For a 5th round pick to get as much playing time as he has.  Most picks below round 3 should take a couple of years to get up to speed.  He's been a decent player.  Crumedy, no comment We turned Barrett into Jackson.  This was an amazing move and basically got a starting CB for a 7th round pick.  Pretty shrewd if you ask me. Coker, maybe the best Free Agent signing of the 2024 draft class. So, in short, you can't say that the draft was a bust.  It isn't a home run but all but one are still on the team and outside of Brooks have made contributions to wins.  2025 draft class has been much better with almost every pick making contributions this season.  Now take Fitterer's two years and compare them to Morgan and tell me that they have the same philosophy.
    • He hasn’t led crap, he’s on loaded teams and a piece of the puzzle. And he’s he has improved drastically but it took the ultimate QB whispers in Shanahan and KOC. You put him on this Panther team and he’s back to normal Darnold
    • Slavin and Jarvis week to week. Florida cheap shots took out our two best players.  I’d start KK so he can beat the brakes off someone.
