Peterson wants to be a Panther

Mr. Scot

I'm not agaisnt drafting Peterson #1 overall this year for three reasons.

1) He is clearly in the top 5 talent overall with another 4 guys who none of which stick out from the others. This draft is not very good from the looks of things right now. But the top 5 players are good players and for the most part equal that of past top five talents (not drafted top 5) in years past.

2) He's position/role friendly. He could be a #1 or #2 CB, a nickle back, a free safety, a strong safety, a punt returner and a special teamer even. Versitility is big in the NFL at all talent levels. And I think a defensive mind like Rivera would love to be able to use Peterson in multiple ways, in multiple looks.

3) Playing in an NFL secondary is 80% instint, in my opinion. Unlike the defensive line and linebackers who have to maintain certain gap control and offensive players that have to pick up on changing routes but also protection coverages, a talented CB can go out and be a game changer without a full knowledge of the scheme or playbook. Now, I'm not saying that learning the scheme and playbook isn't needed, it is and that's the other 20% but it is needed less than that of other positions. Even if all that is missed this offseason is the mini camps and such, those are big for rookies. Especially a QB or DT or DE. With a CB, bring them in to training camp and they are probably going to be ok.

Worth remembering that the Texans had greater need at runningback than they did at DE when Charley Casserly took Mario Williams over Reggie Bush.

I ripped that decision mercilessly at the time, but knowing what we know now, I doubt there's a GM in the league who wouldn't have done the same.

Exactley thats why the panthers need to play more close attention to the work ethic and flim study not to the athletic ability. Dont get me wrong its good to have that great ability to stand out infront of others. But just like in college the reason why bush was so great was his speed he just out ran everybody. Most people thought he had the ability to be a good every down back in the NFL.But to find out he is really a 3 down home run hitter in the right situation. Witch its not bad but he want who they thought he was going to be. Thats why the panthers should pay close attention to Newton or who ever.

Wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being PP. Great tape, great combine, good character. "Cleanest" player in the draft. I'm not sure how I would feel about him as a returner though. Usually you don't have one of your best/highest payed players do it.

Tell that to Steve Smith and the Carolina Panthers. Both sides seemed to have pushed the issue at one point or another.

yeah, there are some DT options in FA but who said that they are realistic?

1.he is not a clear-cut bpa

2.so what? as long as your pass-rush doesnt work, your secondary will be burned all day long...

He is the clear cut BPA. There are no questions on his game, or between his ears. All the QB's are not worthy of the no. 1 overall, and the DT's have plenty of questions. AJ Green is the closest to PP in terms of BPA, and that is not as much of a need for us as CB.

So What? Seriously....Marshall is most likely gone, who do you plug in there?

I am sensing a Clemson fan here?

We need to take Peterson. He is safe, and will make a difference right away. Who ever said you can have too many good defensive backs? In the new pass happy NFL, 2 decent DB's are not enough. A team with 2 good DB's will consistently get beat by the third slot WR. A team with 3 good corners will get burned by a fourth WR on a deep team or a TE / RB. It makes sense to have 4 good DB's now. It didn't make sense 10 years ago...but it does now!

Peterson reminds me a bit of Charles Woodson, if we used PP like the Packers use Woodson, i.e. moving him about to create different match ups then he could be a game changer, rather than just somebody that shuts down half the field (not that thats a bad thing).
