Panthers choosing btw Gabbart & Newton...this week???

This is an odd draft for QB's. This could end up being one of the best QB classes in history, or it could end up as one of the worst.

I've never seen a group with this much potential that had so many questions marks. Heck, all of the top four QB's have the potential to be great, but each also has some significant questions about them and could just as easily be huge busts.

For those that don't want Gabbert, you may have an advantage. Due to the lockout, it looks like Gabbert will be stuck with some 2nd rate receivers he is unfamiliar with on his pro-day. This is the type of thing that can really hurt his performance...particularly on his deep throws, which he needs to nail if he wants any chance to be #1.

Unfortunately for Gabbert, he will throw to some unfamiliar targets. Missouri doesn't have any draft prospects at receiver, and current NFL players are prohibited from participating in pro days because of the lockout. So Gabbert is expected to throw to receivers from Central Missouri State, Northwest Missouri State and Lindenwood University.

Everybody already knows who were drafting. The only question left is, what jersey # does he wear? Buy #2 from Clausen? Buy #11 from Gettis? #1? Thats the only debate left. A month ago one of these QBs wasnt even considered a first round pick by some folks, now we're supposed to pretend we're not gonna take him. OK. LOL.

what size you want? i got you...

Which means he will have to go through what all the other QB prospects did at the combine. Sorry Gabby

Sometimes things aren't made explicit on a forum, maybe this is one of those cases and I've read a lot of the posts too literally.

Having said that, I do think there's a lot of people here who do make bad arguments that are too simple.

Poster x: Cam has raised too many red flags for me to support him.

Poster y: But no candidate is perfect and it's a fact that you need a franchise QB to win the superbowl! We need a QB, so we have to take the risk.

How many times have you read this type of argument? I've seen it way too much for my liking.

fwiw, poster x 80% of the time believes in this nirvana fallacy of getting a vet to lead the panthers to winning now, and figuring out the long term future of QB later on without making barely any investment. "HEY if, ...HEY if we trade down to 4 and get Palmer we only moved down 3 spots and then we can still pick Fairley/PP/Dareus and pick Christian Ponder in the 4th and have Shula groom him for 3 years! COOL!"

If you're looking for a rational rebuttal, well I'm sick of people bringing this argument up myself. You don't have to look far to find veteran QBs that failed even in this same type of scenario, so to assume the empirical point of view that it's the best way moving forward isn't really supported substantially.

Eh. Dude, you know that was just an example to prove my point. The specifics aren't important. I just want people to focus on scouting rather than arguing with a cold risk/reward approach.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that Central Missouri State, Northwest Missouri State and Lindenwood University had any receiving prospects working out at the combine. Sorry Veiny

I don't think it's been mentioned enough that this could potentially be a great QB class. Everyone has already labeled it as a weak class because there isn't an obvious #1 QB to pick. I am not saying it will be a great QB class, but everyone looks at guys with "red flags" or "question marks" and assumes they will be an automatic flop. Maybe what appears to be lack of a quality QB is actually just depth.

Newton, Locker, Ponder, Mallet, Gabbert, Kaepernick, Dalton, Devlin, Stanzi... could all be good, or could all be the next round of Ryan Leafs & David Carrs.

Do you mean pro day? What I was saying was Gabby is gonna have to throw to unfamiliar receivers just like all the other QB prospects did at the combine...am I correct?

Gabbert won't just be throwing to unfamiliar receivers but also not very good ones, lol.

Wonder if he's even been able to work out with them at all...

I expect his pro day to not be very good now. Too bad for him.

Thats my point! If that is the case Gabbert might as well thrown at combine to better receivers. at least he still has that private workout...
