Meril Hoge on Blaine Gabbert

He also says that he doesn't think anyone should draft a QB in the top ten EVER.

I'm sure the Colts agree with him.

I do agree with his skepticism of Gabby, and for the same reasons. However, as I said before; I've never watched the kid play a game, so who am i to say.

He actually said you shouldn't take a qb in the top 20... Which is fine but the reality it is it happens and people reach for QBs all the time... Gabbert doesn't belong at #1, but this was a weird play to show it. Looked to me like Gabbert was actually moving up in the pocket before he skiddadled when things did collapse. eh. His pocket awareness is really what he needs to work on, but that isn't totally unusual for guys coming out of college.

Rivera also thinks that the spread isn't that big a deal, unlike what Hoge said. So I think that benefits the college QBs as far as our guys are concerned.

I don't know if anyone noticed...but before Gabbert declared if you went to a 2012 mock draft, Gabbert was placed anywhere from 1-3. He didn't just come out of no where. This dude is an idiot anyways, what has he gotten right before?

He just plays it safe. Pretty smart actually; since he doesn't actually have to win anything to keep his job. He just needs to not reach and make a fool of himself.

Point out the negs + Drop a brief disclaimer about potential = profit

Not to intrude on everyone discussion... But it seems like every potential high QB has some pocket problem or mechanical error... I remember last year everyone kept saying the same things about Bradford. Spread offense blah blah blah blah.

Whatever, the truth is anyone of these QB's could be a success, and if we land him everyone will be giving him bj's by this time next year... So enjoy the speculation while you get it.

He started two years at Missouri in an offense that is known for putting up numbers in a conference that is known for putting up numbers. He didn't beat anybody. He didn't put up numbers. He didn't play in a pro-style offense, and he doesn't have great mechanics. I think most people would call that out of nowhere.

Some draft people might have had him projected to go very high next year, but that stuff never matters. Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Jake Locker, Brian Brohm and Ryan Mallett showed what happens most of the time if you return to school. It hurts your stock by giving scouts too much tape to evaluate. Most of the top picks at quarterback in the last few years have been underclassmen that declared early: Stafford, Sanchez, Freeman, Russell, Young, Smith. With the only exceptions being Ryan (fair enough) and Bradford (didn't really play a senior season).
