Down to three guys???

Saw this earlier today via twitter from Wesley Bunting...

Hearing 3 names for the #Panthers pick at one...#Alabama DL Marcell Dareus, #Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert and #Auburn QB Cam NEwton #NFLDRAFT

I know we have discussed quite a bit about these guys over the past few weeks but if the list IS down to these guys how do you rate them? FYI I hope petersen isn't out of the equation but I think Bunting is referring to the the number one pick...if we trade down all bets are off.

I personally wouldn't be upset with any of these guys but this is how I would rank them:

1a Blaine Gabbert: I'm really warming up to Blaine and as much as I like Cam's upside I think Gabbert is the safer pick. But safer doesn't mean better.

1b Marcell Dareus: A lot of people want this guy (cough JOAT cough) and I'd be happy with him but I can't imagine passing on a QB at number 1 overall when our QB situation is shaky. He isn't as good as Sue was and St. Louis went QB. But he does fill a big hole for this team...a hole that HAS to be filled one way or another. I'd just hate to reach for a role player with a potential franchise QB sitting there.

2. Cam Newton: you can talk about what he did in his past...and some love to (cough JOAT cough) but let's be honest, the FO will do their diligence on Cam and if he is that big of a risk he WILL NOT be the pick. If every thing checks out and they don't feel Gabbert is worthy, then I think they take Cam at number one.

AJ Green is flying under the radar right now but I truly think he is still in play. Schefter said he talked to 7 personnel guys and he thinks Green just might be BPA over even Peterson on a lot of teams boards. He hasn't gotten a lot of love at the top of the draft and it might be counter intuitive with all the receivers we drafted last year.

But just keep it in mind. I won't be shocked if he ends up being the guy.

Really if we don't trade I'd be disappointed. If I just have to chose someone Marcell or Peterson will do. If we get a QB I would feel like we need to have a nice vet lined up for the next two years or it's a stupid choice.

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
