Siefert on Newton - Myth & Reality

Recommended Posts

Since everyone is posting, various links on Newton. Aplogies if already posted:

After this quote there is a discussion of statistics...

First, we have to remember that Newton was the quarterback on two different teams that won national championships. In 2009, he took Blinn (Texas) College to the NJCAA National Football Championship. This past season, he led Auburn to the BCS national championship.

It's possible that his personality has rubbed some people the wrong way, but to me, championships are the best tangible evidence of leadership we can find. You could argue that Newton's raw athletic ability simply overpowered opponents, but to me there is too much that goes into a college season to credit one supremely talented player for a title. Maybe in high school, and possibly junior college, but not at the level of the SEC.

I wasn't inside Auburn's locker room last season, or Blinn's the year before, but you would have to stack up a lot of hard evidence for me to convince me that Newton isn't a leader of some measure. If any specific examples have been cited, I've missed them.

So...best measure of success is winning championships....

Greg McElroy

The Golden Calf of Bristol

Matt Flynn

Vince Young

Matt Leinart

Craig Krenzel

All quality starting qbs? Only one of them is a good qb.

Lol, come on, is there an elite qb today who took his team to the national title game and won?

Hold on there sole Gabbert lover on this site. He was measuring leadership not success. I can agree with that but at the end he says 'some measure' of leadership, which to me is a given and to even be a QB you must have 'some measure'.

I never questioned Cam's leadership though, so that doesn't sway me at all just like his background becasue I don't question his character either. And I don't want him, just my opinion.

well, it doesn't hurt to be a winner in college...in cam's case the tape doesn't lie and the stats don't lie...he's just better than gabbert...he has the better arm...he handles pressure better...he faced better defenses...cam made plays when it mattered...gabbert didn't

What would be insightful?

Something with actual news. A bit of insider info maybe. We've heard the same arguments before, I kinda wish these writers would give us something we didn't already think of/hear about.

    • Dave in a presser gassed up Anthony Tyus III and dying to see him on the field.  I mean 3 is all that needed right, and Dan loves etienne. He's one year filling in his body. If brooks is back, toss in chubba, thats 3.
    • After seeing hits in the last two UDFA pools, I do not in this group sorta of a let down after I gassed myself up.  Not like I know of their games, but just expected more. The duke DT only has to beat out hunte (2025 UDFA) or Ray (DL coach's kid) or even Cam Jackson mid 2025 5th.  I thought they would bring in more edges, IOL, TEs, etc...
    • My 2 favorite picks, since you didn't ask? 3. Brazzell II.  A 1000 yard WR with 4.37 speed and checks all the boxes for a Z Wide Receiver.  IN THE THIRD ROUND!!! 5.  Sam Hecht.  I think he will take over as the starter at some point this season and never look back.  IN THE FIFTH ROUND. Runner Up:  2. Hunter:  We were targeting a DT early in this draft because we did very little to replace Robinson in free agency.  Hunter was our guy and he will start. In addition to that, you got a starting tackle that should man one side of the new OL we will build for Bryce's second contract. A starting WR, offensive lineman, defensive lineman and possible Offensive tackle (at some point during this year from this draft will start.  UNREAL. In addition, I don't doubt that Wheatley (5th round) takes the FS job by next year and Lee III is Jackson's replacement in 2027.   Finally, even Kuwatch should be a special teams demon and LB depth.   Last year's draft was so good it was ugly.  This one will turn out to be uglier.  No offense Basbear--this ain't about you.
