What will it take for our offense to succeed?

Sort of moving away from it.

We had a Coryell offense under Fox when Dan Henning was the coordinator. We're moving back to that kind of attack.

Davidson was a student of Charlie Weis. Weis had some Coryell influence (serving under Ray Perkins) and there are similarities in the systems, but what Davidson ran wasn't quite the same as what Henning did.

By Foxball I meant not only a type of system but also the refusal to adapt his offense to counter what opposing defenses were bringing to the table.

I don't know the actual stats and I may be wrong in my assumption. Last year though, it felt like how we started the game, in terms of play calling, defenses would adapt, stop us cold, yet, we'd do nothing different. Nothing to change things up.

Granted, that probably had a lot to do with the inexperience we had at the qb position, but still.

The '09 Bucs were in a similar situation, qb wise, all were playing downright horrible, at least the HC tried switching things up and letting his young qb attempt to throw more than two times in a row before dialing up like 10 run plays in a row.

As far as the failure to adapt, that part you're correct about.

I dont think he would have problem with learning a new offense. He's a seasoned vet. I think he just didn't have much to work with in Washington. He still can throw deep with accuracy. I'd go with Palmer based off of his past success which isnt really a good thing to do. His last game against us makes him the last choice of QB's on my list.

If we draft Newton I cant see the Panthers making a spending alot of money on a McNabb.or Palmer.

I think a qb is just a piece of the puzzle.I think a guard can be drafted or picked up.My position of trepadation is the OT.We have a first rd pick tied up with Otah but he has not seen the field in some time and I havent a clue what his outlook is.The best way to make a medicore qb work is a great OL.A tackle is hard to find and would there be anyone availible in the third that could come in and start.

IDK if that is such a good idea. McNabb has used the race card too many times for my liking.

If he can do for Cam what he helped do for Vick making him more balanced I am all for it.

What will it take? better play calling that's not outdated & ugh a Winner behind center maybe that's not average...

I like McNabb and if we could get him at a good price I could survive with it. But you are right he would probably be the best mentor around for Newton and Newton would not have to rush into the position.

I honestly think all we need is solid QB play with support from the coaching staff. Even with Davidson's horrid playcalling we were top 10 in offense in 08 right?

The only real losses we've suffered on offense since then was Moose and Keydrick Vincent. Vincent was solid, but not a key part of the puzzle. Moose was great and all, but I think the two youngsters can just about fill the shoes of his 17 year vet days. If we get solid QB play and coaches that actually care about winning we can be a top offense again quickly.

If we're going Cam (like I think we probably are) we can expect to NOT have an exciting year this year. Maybe a small measure of success at best, but realistically playoffs are probably wishful thinking. The NEXT year we can expect Beast Mode Offense if Cam's attitude and work ethic are how they seem.

Someone else made the point in another thread, and I agree with it. If we get Cam, we can probably expect something along the lines of what the Bucs went through the past two years (maybe a slightly better year 1, the Panthers are nowhere near as devoid of talent as the Bucs were in 09).

    • Don't take this personal, but anyone who watches pregame or game broadcast on any of the four major networks & can't point out a dozen "experts" that Luke would do a better job than, is just not paying attention. IMO
    • overall agree on the draft grade as a whole on on each pick, but every time I read (and I have read it more than once) that we "gave up two firsts" for Bryce, I am confused. We gave up the 2024 first, but we swapped 2023 firsts, so we didn't give up anything there. We did give up our former first rounder in DJ, but I don't think thats what you mean as one of the "firsts" we gave up.
    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
