Asking Favre to be Newton's mentor would be dangerous

Imagine this: Brett Favre assuming the role that a 41-year-old with the rare opportunity of still being an active player in the NFL should actually fill.

The dots are easy enough to connect. Favre and Cam Newton have the same agent, Bus Cook. Newton is a raw talent in need of plenty of guidance to develop into the top-notch quarterback a lot of NFL personnel people think he can be. Favre is the senior-citizen quarterback who has never shown the ability to grasp the definition of "retirement."

So it wasn't a surprise to see it recently suggested in the St. Paul Pioneer Press that whatever team drafts Newton just might be inclined to acquire Favre to serve as some sort of "mentor."

Painful as it might seem to many, a legitimate case could be made for yet another Favre return. The potential for the lockout to eliminate offseason workouts and cause most or all of training camp to be missed is right in line with Favre's normal calendar between seasons. If we've learned anything, it's that, when it comes to quitting, you simply can't take him at his word.

A legitimate case also could be made for one of the several quarterback-desperate teams that could end up choosing Newton, who might also be in the market for an experienced addition to serve as a bridge until the rookie is ready to start.

But that hardly seems like Favre. His presence on any team would create a circus sideshow that would likely do nothing to help Newton's chances for success.

      Btw... only Mitch fugging Marner has a better +/- than Key 🔑!!! And, Mitchy needed 5 more games and almost 100 more shifts to get there.

      I was honestly flabbergasted to see Rod send out Stanky and the boys to to matchup against their top line to start the game. The reason that line has been so effective is because they've been matched mostly against 2nd and 3rd lines all year. You've got last change. Use it to your advantage.

      Nobody played well on defense last night. But, the vitriol towards Chatfield (and to a lesser extent, K'andre) is bigly misplaced. People (not just you) just refuse to accept how bad Slavin has been this season. And, I get it. Canes fans (and informed analysts) have spent nearly a decade trying to explain to casuals just how good Jaccccob is at hockey. 4Nations happened and the hockey watching public started to listen. National media even started floating the idea of creating a new award in his honor. Then this season, he gets hurt. It happens. NBD. But, when he finally came back, it wasn't the same. He'll get back to his old self in no time. Probably just some rust, it'll be fine. Only, it wasnt rust, and he's not fine. He's bad right now. It wasnt just last night. Although, that was absolutely the worst game of his NHL career. Slavin (-4) currently has the 3rd worst +/- of anyone left in the playoffs. We've  been begging the world to recognize Jaccob Slavin's greatness. And, by the time we finally got people to listen, he shits the bed! I blame Kash!
