Bucky Brooks: Carolina building for Newton

Bucky Brooks: The Panthers are looking for sizzle. Cam Newton gives them an "it" factor. He's built to play in the offense they're constructing around him.

I thought this was a really interesting thing that Brooks tweeted a few days ago. What does he mean by us constructing an offense around Cam Newton?? What moves have we made to make him possibly think that? Is the Chargers-esque offense that we are probably going to run a fit for Newton or something??

I hope he is right because Newton is probably going to be the pick. He's not the kind of QB where you can just put him in any offense and he is going to succeed. He's going to have to have something taylor-made for him.

i think he more or less is talking about how we have built a team that a rookie could play with...strong running game...went out and got a TE which can be a rookie QB's security blanket...newton does fit with our vertical passing scheme b/c that's what he does best is throw the ball down the field and with accuracy...it's still just speculation on brooks' part

Like I said, we're not going to shove Cam into a system and tell him to learn it. They're going to take the base system Chud runs and adapt it to best fit what Cam does best. Saying Cam's not the same as Rivers is pointless; he doesn't have to be. Our version of that offense could potentially be quite different from what SD runs, even if the basics are the same.

Newton in the gun, Stew and Goodson on each side of him..Smith in the slot w/Gettis, Lafell on the outside. Shockey at TE. Who do you try and cover?

Well at this point in his career you blitz the hell out of Newton and hope he makes a mistake (likely as a rookie). He's gonna be a Panther...There almost isn't even an argument against it. I hope it works out though.

First off bucky Brooks is a clown. Second, Newton is a fit for this offense? 900 page complicated playbook? Did bucky see newton look like a deer in the headlights with Gruden?

I could get excited about watching that after all the boring years- and I guess that's what the FO is looking for.

For starters, we don't know what our offense will look like this year with a whole new staff. Assuming we are still run first, this is a very rookie friendly offense but the o-line has to block this year or we will have the same result. Has anyone heard any updates on Otah? We can't open holes like we use to without him. :auto:

    • The meat and potatoes:
Out of 30 qualifying QBs in Week 1, Young ranked: Dead last in EPA (-0.60) Dead last in success rate (20%) Dead last in Y/A at 3.6 Dead last in passer rating at 27.5 How are you averaging just 3.6 Y/A on unpressured dropbacks in the first half of a game? Thinking back to that halftime deficit, I’m reminded of this stat: The Panthers led at halftime in three of Young’s 12 starts last year. They are now 0 for 1 this year. In his 29 career starts, the Panthers have led at halftime in 5 of 29 (17%). Since 2000, there have been 37 QBs to start at least 25 games in their first two years in the NFL. Young is the ONLY QB to lead at halftime in fewer than six of his starts. Young is the ONLY QB to lead at halftime in fewer than 20% of his starts. So many people were backing Young based on the super small sample at the end of the year when they thought he played better, and he did play moderately better. But even in those games, he delivered average stats against the NFL’s easiest schedule of pass defenses to close the year, with every opponent ranking 20th or worse. There’s never been a QB who rebounded from performance like Young delivered in his first couple of years to go on to become a franchise quarterback. Some stay around as a journeyman, but they don’t lead teams. The Panthers put all their eggs in the Young basket this offseason. The Panthers were the darlings to win the NFC South by many. Yes, it’s only one game, and there certainly are opportunities to improve.
The opportunity is to start someone else at QB.   I don’t want to see anymore debate in whether Bryce is the worst QB ever.  Especially not the worst #1 overall pick ever.  What a fuging bust.
    • I hope Adam Thielen is having a nice time tonight.
    • Let this sink in. This is the dude that theilen would rather play with than Bryce.   Oof
