he's flat out said that he won't play if that happens. He'll sit out. Quite certain they'll trade him..

Link that quote please. Because I've read about everything that's been said about this deal and not once have I read that. He's said he'll never sign a long term deal, but he's been very careful, (and his agent too) about not saying that he'll never play for the Panthers again. Until I see it in print, I have to say more disinformation please, we need it...

The only reason I wouldn't want Peppers here is because he doesn't want to be here. Same as it was with Jenks, but Carolina is not foolish enough to let him walk without trying to get something for him (the reason they tagged him). It is business afterall and Peppers isn't hurting for money even if he doesn't get traded. :beatdeadhorse5:

Agreed, he is still only one player, and if he doesn't want to be here, I would trade him for whatever I could get. If we can get a 1st rounder, I would be estatic.

The fact is if Peppers is still in Carolina his heart won't be in any of the games he plays. He is the best defensive end in the league when he wants to be. It was smart to tag him and hopefully get a couple of good picks for him. Or a nice trade.

i disagree.

if a deal isn't made to trade peppers, i think we will see him play his absolute best....

...IF he's smart, he'll be driving his price tag up even more for next season all the while collecting almost $1m a week this season.

per the charlotte observer.

Now, the chances look slim that there will be a trade involving Peppers for at least three reasons: 1) Teams are so reluctant to give up first-round picks; 2) Peppers has a short list of prospective new teams and getting all the elements to work for a deal would be difficult; and 3) The Panthers have made it clear they want to keep him. The franchise tag is intended to be restrictive, and it is.

I wouldn't be surprised if Peppers stays as I think the Haynesworth deal has wrecked the trade market for Pep, but of course the Panthers are saying they want to keep him. What are they supposed to say? We're desperate to trade him, and now accepting low-ball offers? It sounds like posturing.

Haynesworth didn't necessarily wreck the market when you see how the deal is really structured. Per Chris Mortensen it's really 4 years, 48 million. The rest is fluff to make it look better (similar to what the Seahawks did with Nate Burleson's supposed 7 year, 49 million dollar "revenge on the Vikings" contract).

What the team might have to wait for is for the DE market to dry up a little. Once guys like Chris Canty and Antonio Smith are no longer options, there'll be more of a market.

"How long will that take?" you ask.

Good question :sosp:

    • I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.
    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
