Steve Wysche on Smitty

it boils down to 2 things

1) his attitude...if it sucks we don't want him around regardless of how much he has in the tank.

2) what he has left in the tank.

i don't care where he retires. i just don't want to be stuck with him like we are with kasay presently and like we were with jake and other fox favorites just because we like keeping people around here forever, even when the overall team suffers by having subpar players on board. and, yes...i'm calling kasay subpar because we have to waste a roster spot because he can only do half of his job. only reason he is still around is because he's been here forever. not a good enough reason, imo.

if his attitude is good and he can play as well as he did in his 20s...fine. once he starts slowing down and getting hurt a lot then we need to be moving him while he still has some value. love him or not...he is just a commodity. you have to decide what's more important, making the team better or staying loyal to players that you love. if we can make the team better by trading smith away then we need to do it while we can still get something for him.

1) To give more force or effectiveness to; strengthen.

2) To strengthen with additional personnel or equipment.

3) To strengthen by adding extra support or material.

4) To increase the number or amount of; augment.

A smartass question deserves a smartass response I suppose.

Unfortunately I think Reed is closer to the truth about Smitty. But given the uncertainty of this year and everything else, he isn't going to demand a trade and either have to eat crow if they don't move him or if no one will give enough to make it worth our while play for less than the 15 million he is scheduled to make. He is going to play it close to the vest and once the season starts he will quietly get traded to another team while we bring in someone else to replace him.

I will hate to see him go, but I was a Panther's fan before him and will be one after him as well.

So you can basically choose to believe whichever article that reinforces your own personal opinion. In my mind they both are a wash since neither come from Steve Smith or Marty Hurney.

I'm not buying the "it's what he didn't say" argument that Reed speculates about. I don't see any reason for Steve to be spouting off the "rah-rah-rah" line that Reed so desperately wants to hear to convince him that Steve is coming back. Why would Steve say those things. He wants to know the plan and the shape of the team. Without free agency not even Ron Rivera knows that. Steve is still in wait and see mode and doesn't want to tip his hand, a smart decision from a smart player.

I, just like all of you are just going to have to wait and see what Marty and Steve do..

    • I agree.  Some situations are all we should ask--shadow the qb (someone suggested that) or cover a TE, or blitz from the big nickel position.  Forget S, edge, CB,LB--
    • I work with social emotional learning and I don't know why a player with all the tools (to Snow's point) sucks when he was a top 10 player in college.  It is not talent, and it is usually not due to some learning disability-.  It comes down to dispositions or emotions in a lot of cases. The reason I pointed out Simmons in particular is because he was drafted to be a DC's new weapon.  I have friends who played in the NFL and they talk about the amount they throw at you--and those were guys who played 1 position.  Simmons shows his ability on special teams--where you are a bit more turned loose than scripted or forced to read blocking schemes or pass routes, etc.  See ball, get ball.  Simmons has been tried at CB, nickel, S , LB edge and he has had 5 different coordinators if you do not count the STs guy.  This would overwhelm most people.  Nobody knows what it does to your confidence and motivation to go from the best player on your team and a top college player to getting cut.   I just think that players like this can be saved.  To say, "He just isn't good" is not to answer the question, "Why was this not noticed during the interviews?  game film?  Combine?  References?  etc.  No, there has to be something more to it than that.  I think Isaiah needs one job and that job should be aligned with a strength.  If he fails then, fine.  Maybe he lost his mojo.  Maybe he never had it.  But to understand what he has been through is to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.  If you played in high school, you got a happy meal version of what it is like in college.  College was an appetizer when compared to pros.  We shall see.  But I am more optimistic about Simmons than I am XL.  Simmons was asked to things most NFL players cannot do.  XL just needs to catch the damn ball in bounds.   Middle schoolers do it every day.
    • This was a super interesting analysis....and I will say I dont think it prevents us from looking at Safety in the draft. IF Ransom takes a step up and outplays Moehrig, there is an out for them after the year as a potential cap cut.  EVEN if not, if you are right and Simmons shows some promise as a Big nickel and Moehrig gets  injured and Ransom looks good (or even if Moehrig looks bad) I could see him being a cap casualty in 2027 as long as we feel we have enough talent there as starting potential.  Lotta football to play and Lotta injuries to happen.  Im hopeful because his measurables are through the roof, but unless they translate you still gotta go with what you got.
