Newton to take part in player-organized workouts

Panthers' players are organizing informal workouts beginning next week in Charlotte - and the team's No. 1 draft pick plans to attend.

Cam Newton, the Auburn quarterback taken first overall in last month's draft, will be among those participating in the workouts at Charlotte Christian, one of Newton's agents said Tuesday.

Newton has been training at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., with former Panthers quarterback Chris Weinke and Ken Dorsey, another ex-NFL quarterback who played under Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski at the University of Miami.

But Tony Paige, one of Newton's two representatives, said the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner is looking forward to getting on the field with his Carolina teammates for the first time.

"When you're a rookie, especially as a quarterback, it's good to work on timing. But (it's) mainly getting around your teammates," Paige said. "I think Cam is excited about getting to know his teammates. Typically by now, he would know everybody."

Two agents getting to be a trend

"Players hiring tag-teams of agents are more common than you may think. They are usually a pairing where one agent has a lot of negotiating experience in with NFL teams and the other has developed a relationship with the player and his family."

Tony Paige has already been representing Cam's brother, Cecil Jr, for several years.

Just asking. How many players have multiple agents for the same responsibility?

He is signed to an agency which has numerous people who specialize in specific thing.

My agent is actually a group of people who each handle television, film, writing etc

Do you really think it's like Jerry McGuire with people just driving around and screaming into cell phones?

AMAZING... That most of you are debating why he has multiple agents, and not excited that he is doing what most of us already knew he would do; workout with his team mates.

I know this lockout is driving us all nuts but SNAP out of it. This is great news for the franchise that we love! Quit bickering over petty BS already!

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
