Bucs QB Freeman See Some of Himself in Cam Netwon - Charlotte Observer

I didn't see this posted, so I apologize if its duplicated. Enjoy!

Freeman was back on the IMG campus Tuesday for the start of the Buccaneers' three-day minicamp that he organized. A number of analysts compared Newton to Freeman after the Panthers made Newton the No. 1 overall pick in the April draft.

But Freeman is not so sure.

"He's a little faster than me. He definitely does more on the ground than I do," Freeman said. "But at the same time, like as far as a pocket passer, it's kind of similar. We're kind of a different kind of athlete. Similar builds, but he's just a different kind of athlete."

I feel that Freeman is a more accurate depiction of Cam than all the other comparisons like Roethlesberger(sp), McNabb, Culpepper, etc. That being said, in terms of athletic ability and potential, I think Cam could be better than Freeman.

Newton is a better athlete but Freeman was more of a pure passer coming out.

He was less likely to run than Newton but he wasn't a great passer coming out of college. He was not that accurate and his mechanics were not great. What Freeman has working for him was a terrific work ethic and a burning desire to get better. He is the epitome of what a great quarterback should be from a work ethic and leadership point of view. Newton spending time with him is a great thing and if Cam emulates Freeman it will be nothing but positive for the Panthers. Of course he can avoid the turnovers and interceptions and I would be happy.

This. I posted some of the predraft analysis of Freeman here back in March/April. There were some similar concerns about him that we saw about Newton.

Bottom line, to date I think Cam is the total opposite of what the media and haters projected him to be.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth
    • The fact that this is even a discussion is a testament of the level of front office badassery that's going on.
    • Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
