Stewart wants us to hang on to Williams

When Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams get together, the tailbacks seldom discuss football.

So Stewart has not pressed his Panthers' running mate about his pending free agency.

But Stewart made his views clear Monday when asked whether he wants Williams to remain in Charlotte.

"Oh, yeah," Stewart said. "So once they get this deal done I'm pretty sure the organization would like to keep the duo going. I mean, if it's not broke, why fix it?"

Stewart was part of an NFL panel Monday at Bobcats President Fred Whitfield's Achievements Unlimited basketball school. He joined Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, New York Giants receiver and Charlotte native Hakeem Nicks and Fox Sports' NFL analyst Solomon Wilcots at Ardrey Kell High for a discussion on their educational and athletic experiences and most inspiring coaches and teachers.

Stewart said he's glad to hear reports that labor talks have progressed and a collective-bargaining agreement could be in place by the end of the week.

"We've been working out, working out, working out. It's time to put it to use," Stewart said. "It is that time of year where training camp starts. So I'm pretty excited to see if things are going to add up the way they're supposed to."

Stewart spent the offseason working out in Miami, as well as in Charlotte and in his hometown in Washington. He attended the Panthers players offseason training activities, where he got his first look at the offense of coordinator Rob Chudzinski.

"We were able to get into the playbooks a little bit and mesh with some of the guys - just get some type of chemistry built with the new guys that are on the team," Stewart said. "It was pretty productive."

Double trouble for life?

What do you do with Goodson? trade him?

If Stewart and Williams want to stay for slightly less, I think you let Goodson play up a bit for this season and then trade him before next years draft for as much as possible.

It would be pretty hard to keep all 4 of them. Smart move to bring up the value of a player and then trade them for a draft pick. It might be pretty hard to trade a RB with how short a RB shelf life is.

You'd have to trade goodson or Sutton.

Sutton hasn't proven anything and wouldn't get a lot in trade. Goodson has proven he was able to rack up yards in garbage games. I like his potential but I think he's brittle. Like more brittle than Stewart.

Williams is the only sure fire back this team has in regards to staying healthy and contributing historically. Letting him go would mean trusting in three backs that haven't proven they can stay healthy or contribute long term.

Stewart has never missed a regular season game due to injury. Williams has finished two straight years on IR.

Please rectify these two facts with your opinion listed above.

never missing a game is a bit misleading for Stewart. He's been on a knife edge nearly his entire career. During his phenomenal streak during 09 he almost caused serious damage to his Achilles. Also he did miss those 2 games this year with his concussion but that's no biggie.

People say he played poorly in the beginning of the season because of his injury so what's the point of him being on the field if he's going to be so ineffective?

I think they fit well with each other as it seems they both are not as durable as people want. I really hope Stewart doesn't have something pop up this year, apparently he is FINALLY healthy which is an encouraging thought.

I think people tend to forget how reliant our offense was on our running backs in the John Fox system. Not to mention, how much of a pounding our running backs would take, running into 8 men in the box on 60% of the downs.

I think if we are able to get our passing game to at least be a threat, our runningbacks will see less injuries.

Again, I don't believe our RB's were injury prone. I believe they were thrust into a system that injures runningbacks. I mean honestly, the idea that a person just naturally gets injured more than other people is a little strange to me, yet it has become a common phrase in the NFL. Could it be possible that players are not injury prone, but play in injury prone systems???

    • summary: "let's talk about your draft, what did you think about Freeling" Dan:   guys with a huge upside, can come in and compete to start.  High ceiling "he does what for your offense?" Dan:   it's hard to find left tackles, guys that big and athletic.  We have Icky coming off an injury, we signed Walker, I believe your offensive line can never be too strong.  If we're going to win the game, it's gotta be up front on both sides of the ball, so we make a point of emphasis on making both sides of the front as strong as possible. "how many mocks did you see Monro falling to you." Not many times, left tackles are gonna go a lot earlier than when we took him.  We want to add the best player, in free agency or the draft"  that's our philosophy, to get the best players possible. "Hunter and Brazzell." Dan:  we followed the board.  Lee we felt very highly of him , super strong.  Brazzel so flexible and loose, can open the verticle.  Will Lee we held in high regard. "you take a look at your receiver room, Coker, my goodness, your offensive rookie of the year in Tet.  Lost Rico, but there is Jonathan Brooks. " Brooks coming off two knee injuries, he worked his way back, looking great, fully healthy, will help in pass and run game.  Icky, not sure when he's coming back but we're excited about both "plan on extending Bryce" we'll keep talking, will keep internally.  We believe in him, has such a great grasp of Canales and offense, has improved every year. "he's clearly come back from the benching, the arrow is trending up, where does he feel" Bryce knows where we stand with him, when and if a deal gets done, he knows we feel great with him, we'll get something done at the right time. "if this a prove it situation?" everyone in the building has to prove it, has to earn it. Tmac was everything we wanted, his work ethic, he's so big and talented, but he puts the work in, and is a great teammate. "your level of expectation, the building's level of expectation for 2026 "our goal is to win the division every year, we know we have to earn it.  we have to put the work in every day, proving it on the practice field, and our  guys know that." "schedule" we haven't opened at home in 2 or 3 years.  We love prime time games, hope we get some "
    • this one is gold:     Bryce has a cult inside the Panthers fanbase that has truly developed some NPC hivemind. I'll never understand how he's captured the true essence of the casual fan like that.
