why do people think that Jerry doesn't spend money?

Those numbers dont tell the whole story p55, the variation between 1 and 5 probably isnt the same as 17 - 22. It tells part of the story, I apprec, but not the whole story.

edit: I know youre answering Kurb's post btw, but this is just a caveat.

The variation is substantial at the top and bottom. It is also unduly influenced by when teams sign big name players and free agents. For example despite what else they do, when Indy signs Peyton Manning to a long term contract with perhaps 30-35 million as a signing bonus, that 30 million counts towards the salary spent for 2011. So their salary for 2011 could be one of the top no matter what. Similarly the Panthers will be in the top 5 in salaries in 2011 due to signing our core group and all the signing bonuses it will take to do that.

Look at Washington in 2010- they paid Haynesworth 24 million whereas he is going to make 5 million in 2011. Cutler got 22 million in 2009 for Chicago and Pepper's got well over 20 million in 2010.

If you look at Brady for New England his cap hit in 2010 was 14 million but his salary was only 8 million. Largely because he got his signing bonus in an earlier year when the Patriot's salary was much higher.

It is the reason Beason may not get signed this year. Not because he isn't worth it, but we will have shelled out 70-80 million in signing bonuses before we get to his contract. He deserves an extension for sure but Richardson backed himself in a corner by failing to sign any of the core before now.

Hurney has consistently overpaid for other teams' FAs and overpaid to keep his own players.

The fans that think JR is cheap only think so because they are recent fans or don't have memories that stretch back just a few seasons.

Ralph Wilson is cheap. Would Ralph Wilson pay 16 mil to try and keep a disgruntled DE on his team? Hell no.

and he's certainly not saying JR is.

Exactly, JR has not historically been cheap. Our salary numbers in 2009 were influenced highly by Pepper's 16 million salary, Chris Gamble's 14 million (10 million signing bonus), Gross' 10 million salary (5 million signing bonus) and so forth. In 2009 we had a total of 27 million in signing bonuses.

The 2005 and 2006 numbers reflect major free agent acquisitions which cost us big signing bonuses.

So the variations are not primarily a function of being cheap or being a spend thrift but our spending based on signing bonuses, free agent and big name player signing bonuses, etc. That is why in 2011 we will be in the top 5 unless Hunrey can guarantee the money but pay it out in future years as roster bonuses so as to not shell out so much in signing bonuses.

yep.....and that is the difference between Carolina and say NE. NE would have traded DeAngelo last year.....Hurney will possibly lock him up to a very sweet deal. NE would have traded Pep before it got to the point we had to let him walk.

Because this is the sport of now, what are teams doing NOW to win. The media is not going to look back years and years of a team and say JR is great when recently he sucks. They say he's cheap becasue of a lot of reasons, Fox, Delhomme...these are recent events and the fact is he was cheap during these times so that is why they say he is cheap, because he is. No body called him cheap before last year did they? No, so JR is just getting the criticism he deserves and for some reason homerish fans can't seem to comprehend.

Jake brought us to the super bowl didn't he? So why do people say more recently all he does is throw interceptions? Didn't hear that super bowl get mentioned after the Cardinal game in 09 becasue it is irrelevant, its the past, JR needs to step up and show poeple he was only being cheap for a short period of time...(?)

JR saved a bunch of money by not spending but why is it the fans did not save anything? Man I wish panther fans were my buisness customers, so easily pleased, I'd be filthy JR rich!

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
