Kendric Burney.

Why didn't he get drafted then?

I think people have the perception of him being slow for a CB, that was his main knock. But I remember reading someone where he was batling an injury on his hamstring when he ran the 40. So he ran like a 4.78? or something like that. In later trials, like months later, I think in UNC's proday he ran faster, 4.49 or something like that. I'll look for the link in a moment.

Edit:

You can see the 40 times, his low is 4.59, which is still slow for a CB to be honest.

I can't seem to find the hamstring injury article.

When you look at his profile he is not as big or fast but the thing I like about him is he outplays what he looks like on paper. He is a ball hawk and has all the intangibles to play in the NFL.I think it was a great pickup and feels he can make the team

I'm a Carolina fan, but here is my Burney analysis

Negatives

Kendric Burney is a small defensive back at only 5-9, which is a big hindrance, especially when he could be going up against players this year that are 6-2 plus like: Jordy Nelson from Green Bay (6-3), Roy Williams from Chicago (6-3), Michael Jenkins from Minnesota (6-4), Jacoby Jones from Houston (6-2), Julio Jones from Atlanta (6-3), and Robert Meachem from New Orleans (6-2). Burney is also a predominantly slow corner with a 40 time of 4.7 seconds (slowest 40 time out of the cornerback’s drafted or claimed as undrafted free agents), and he also has somewhat of an inability to get off the ground as his vertical jump was only registered at 32 ½ inches (second lowest in the draft out of the cornerback’s drafted or claimed as undrafted free agents). Burney is a below average open field tackler, and to make up for his lack of speed; he would usually line up five to ten yards from the opposing team’s wide outs.

Positives

To me, the positives definitely out way the negatives as there are five important things regarding Mr. Burney. First off, Burney is not afraid of contact as seen in a video posted earlier where he popped a Rutgers player. Burney is a hard hitting cornerback and is not afraid to jam, bump, or make contact with the opposing team’s wide outs. Secondly, while Burney may be slow, his feet and reactions are quick, which make up for lost time due to his speed; there should be no problem with Kendric switching to a nickelback position. Thirdly, Burney can easily be a top special team’s player as he just has a knack for going out on the field and giving it everything he’s got. Fourthly, he is one of the best at reading the play’s, he is quick at reading whether if it’s a pass or a run play, and he usually capitalizes on that knowledge. Fifthly and probably most importantly, he is a flat out ball hawk. Burney finished his career at UNC with 11 interceptions, 358 interception yards, and 3 interceptions returned for a touchdown. He just has a nose for the ball.

You will see what I mean by each of my analysis by watching the video's below.

    • I've shown you numerous comps for other tackles in the same age and talent range.  His contract, taking into account his age, health, etc.  is the going rate.  It's a fair deal. I've shown you examples of how long it usually takes to find even an average replacement.  Hell, look at every tackle that has ever started for the Panthers.  How many would you consider a success?  They are not easy to find. After everything we've done with this team since drafting Bryce why would we decide to let our best linemen go and add a huge question mark at tackle?   FA is a crapshoot in which any guy available will have cons/issues.  If not, they'll cost a fortune.   Outside of a first or maybe 2nd round pic next year it'll take a few years for a tackle to learn the position at the NFL level.  There are still questions about Icky. Every vet NFL player deals with maintenance.  Between the contract value and history I'm not overly worried about his knee.  I contend his knee issue isn't anything to be overly worried about.  It's not zero risk but it's an acceptable risk.  Every player we draft and every contract we sign has risk.  You're blowing up his own negative words about his knees and ignoring him saying he is healthy and the knee is a non issue.  You have a strong chicken little complex with this team.  Being he has always been a Panther they are very aware of any health issues. We paid now because now is cheaper.  If his knee was really an issue they would have waited.  That tells me it's not the issue you want it to be.
