Cam Newton on Sports Center.

Was interview by Rachael Nichols yesterday after fan fest.

It was probably his most polished interview to date. Asked some boring questions about the team and being a rookie. Said he was really happy with the fan support and how every day hasn't been perfect, but he is just going to try to be the best player he can be.

Rachael was really trying to get a "headline" answer out of him, but Cam did a terrific job of not falling for it.

She asked about the mega huge "Number Controversy", but Cam downplayed it an said, that is was Jimmys number, and the whole thing was overblown and it really isn't that big of a deal.

Then Rachael said, that even if he couldnt get Jimmy's number, he still wants his job. Again, Cam laughed it off and said she was trying to get him in trouble by putting words in his mouth. Then he said that they have a great relationship and they support each other on the field and in the film room.

Very impressive interview.

I will post a video link when I find one.

Jimmy was such a little twat about that # thing. Cam is going to be the guy who puts him out of the league, kind of funny.

I love Cam, but this is a dumb post.

Cam is not entitled to a number, giving up his number to Cam would pretty much make him look like the biggest pussy ever.

Actually I dont agree with that at all. I dont think its a big deal that Jimmy didn't give up the number. Last year when everyone thought Clausen was going to be the savior, he didnt get his number 7 and we all got over it. If the two of them couldnt come up with a deal for Cam to get the number then who cares and move on. Its not like Cam changed his name to Cam Dos and he needs the number. Lets not say Cam DESERVES that number before he actually throws an NFL pass.

mega huge number controversy?

nice reporting, nichols.

The only reason she has a job is because she is barbara walters daughter in law

That wasn't a direct quote, but ESPN keeps bringing it up. I usually dont hate ESPN like most, but it is ridiculous that this is still being brought up.

She sounded so condescending at the end of the interview saying, "he may just be a rookie, but he knows all the veteran answers."

No, it makes him look like a good teammate. He could have been a really good guy about it. He didn't need to hang onto the number that meant NOTHING to him. It was a dick move, and he'll be gone soon enough and then Cam has his pick of whatever he wants.

Clausen only wanted to hang onto the 'toy' like a spoiled child who only wants the 'toy' because another kid showed up at the party and wanted to see it for a minute. He's terrible at football--so soon the #2 will be cam's

This is almost to ridiculous to comment on.

Anybody who is a competitive athlete would not want to give up their number to a guy that is brought in to take his job. Maybe, you are different and would give up your number if you were in Jimmy's situation, but I would have played it just like Jimmy.

It has nothing to do with "being a good teammate". That number is the only thing Jimmy can control at the moment. I think both parties in this played this perfectly.

That number means everything to him. He said, when he chose his number, that is was a statement to all the other NFL teams, that they let him slip into the second round. Its his, end of story.

I still can't believe how big Rachel Nichols ass and legs are. I was a few rows from where she was cutting some commentary video. All these years of seeing here head shot, I had her pegged as a petite chick.

    • I would write “give remmers tight end help” on a yellow sticky note and stuck it in shulas playbook the night before superbowl 50.
    • And don’t worry about Bryce he will be great… Peyton Manning had a horrible rookie year too 😂
    • Nothing wrong with it at all until you start telling others they are bad fans or not fans. But you are the good fan because you never say negative stuff about the team.    I did many years of that type of uninformed fanning because there really was no info and coverage like there is with the internet.    I mean, I used to go to the store and get Street and Smith’s annual football issue. That was about the extent of what you could get if you didn’t live in a big city with sportswriters covering and reporting.  There was no video to look at or replay the games and if you didn’t live in the market you could only rarely see your football team play.    TI have fanned since being a kid in the early 1960s, and as late as 1995 - ‘97 I lived in Atlanta and good luck getting more than 3 or 4 games a year on TV. No radio either. No print coverage outside of an AP recap and box unless they played Atlanta.  People today that have always had the network connection don’t know.    I wasn’t very educated about the Panthers until I finally got internet.
