Not sure if you guys saw but Gabbert is starting the first preseason game for Jacksonville... Garrard hurt but will likely lose his job if Gabbert plays well... similar to St. Louis last year.

I don't think it is so much trying to give Clausen a chance but to make Cam go through the process of "winning" the job. Cam looks to be on track to do what Rivera wants....and that is to be the starter week 1.

Right now they are more neck and neck then you guys think. Clausen is more consistent yet Cam is more flashy with bigger plays yet very inconsistent. They want to see what they can do against first teamers.

it has already been reported by some (like Pat Y) that the people in Carolina's front office and the coaching staff want Newton to be ready enough to start week 1.

It also makes more sense to make Cam go through the motions of moving up the depth chart than just handing him the keys.
