NFLN made interesting point on Cam

CRA

Like I said both a lethal and make DC account for them on almost every play.

Vick is faster, Cam is harder to bring down and will run over db's and some lb's.

Both are crafty and make the first man miss.

Both are nightmares to deal with. To say no where near is abit much

If Cam attempts to run over linebackers, they will eventually carry him off the field on a stretcher.

I said that Cam WILL make plays with his legs. But he will NOT be the running threat that Vick was.

To think he will be is ridiculous.

Cam is a rushing threat an EVERY play.

He easily has the ability to break of a 10-20 yard run on every play.

Then factor in his size and how hard he is to bring down and if the db gets shedded than the 10-20 yard run turns into 40 yd run to a TD.

Im pretty sure Cam LEAD the sec in rushing yards last yr.

Cam threw the ball way more than vick did in college and still put up insane rushing numbers

Different kind of threat.

Vick was nasty elusive and was a threat to break off a 50yd TD every time he had the ball. Whether you want to admit it or not, Cam does NOT posess that type of speed or elusiveness.

Cam will make plays with his legs and that is a good thing. But, his style of running will eventually get him killed in the NFL. Vick made people miss. Cam is more physical. Problem is that the DL, LB, and S in this league are even more physical.

If he tries to make a living with his legs (like Vick did), his career will be a short one.

There are two valid comparisons I see to Newton--Vick and Roethlisberger. Vick because he's fast, and Ben because he can keep a play alive with his feet and shake off the first hit. Neither has anything to do with skin color.

While I love the idea in the OP, I would be more than happy if they spend Newton's entire rookie year getting the fundamentals down to the point where they're reflex, and THEN turning the running game loose. He needs to be respected as a big, aware pocket passer before anyone will ever fear him as a real running threat.

i had done more comparing him to big ben than anything, though comparisons to vick as a running threat have been there, though i've looked at it being the more polished professional version of vick from last year rather than the undisciplined version in atlanta. i can see now adding to that the gunslinger mentality, though. i see a good bit of bret favre in him...not just in the gunslinger mentality, but in the whole team leader/get everybody fired up way as well.

i know we are setting the bar high, here, but i'd rather that be the case than hoping for mediocrity. had enough of that under fox.

what about as a downfield gunslinger? would that not work while he worked on his game?

I mean he might have a little Favre in him that is overlooked. While not ideal long term....it would open up the ground attack.

agreed.

That isn't true. Last year Newton's passing numbers regarding TD/INT ratio, yards per pass attempt, completion percentage, TDs as a ratio to attempts were all near the top. I don't have time to do the comparisons but someone will I am sure. Use the quality stat measures above for Newton, Gabbart, Dalton, Locker and Luck and see where they fall. I am pretty sure Newton's numbers match up very well. Forget the running bonus, just his passing numbers were good.
true. his efficiency rating was better than all of them.

comp %:

5th- andrew luck 70.7%

15th- andy dalton 66.1%

16th- cam newton 66.1%

21st- colin kaepernick 64.9

48th christian ponder 135.7

70th blaine gabbert 127.0

81st jake locker 124.2

andy dalton 6

cam newton 7

andrew luck 8

colin kaepernick 8

christian ponder 8

jake locker 9

blaine gabbert 9

ryan mallett 12

now who can prove he is behind the others in terms of being a passer?

Depends on where those INT's are thrown to. If he throws them on deep passes, not so bad. If he throws them on medium range passes, worse but still not terrible. If he throws them on the short passes, very bad. And watching Cam, his accuracy on the deep balls is good. On the short and medium range stuff though, it was hit and miss.

I do think he will improve though, given time.

agreed, and one thing i am totally convinced of is that this guy can and will improve improve steadily.

not sure if this has been said, but the beauty of forcing that nickel or dime package is our stable of running backs. four wideouts means dwill or jstew are probably somewhere in the backfield. those two against dimebacks? yes please.

AGREED! If we can make opposing D's respect the pass, then our RB's and cam should have great games rushing!

and even if the entire pass game isn't complete....if you can get them to respect the deep threat.....that helps a LOT.
