Newton starter vs Bengals, Week 1 starter TBD

DLo ran 3 times for 6 yards. Oh, and Cam threw for a 1st down on the first drive, so he had nothing to do with the lack of ran success.

Cam threw for two first downs on the first two drives, and we ran 3 times. Maybe if Olsen had run his route better (? i dunno, someone elses idea) we would have run more, but by the time we got the ball back, I think they just wanted to see what Cam could do with his arm... we'll have a better game plan next week, but all I have to say is be ready for the possibility of not running a ton during the regular season, too, if it's not getting the job done.

...did you watch him play? he may not have had the best season ever as far as wins/losses go, but he was the most impressive rookie I've seen in many ways... he set many, many records at the time too if you want to go by stats, but either way, yes, he had one of the best rookie seasons ever.

I remember the season. He flashed greatness at times and he was a struggling rookie most of the time. I think the point is obvious tho, if you look at those stats you see inconsistency. It just comes with being a rook and learning on the fly. Cam is getting the opportunity, and the coaches will likely have more patience than the fans.

Cam is the future of this franchise...get over it. Clausen is like the fat girls you banged when you needed some strange. You want to erase it off your mind and you cant.

If we finish with the worst record in football, again, he may or may not be the future of the franchise.:reddevil:

One is a wr one was a 6th round flier pick and 2 are battleing for the starting job.

So again who would have been the starting cailber QB you said in another post if you didn't go QB this year?

Look at tons of vets...we have the worst QB stable in the NFL, most people could come in here and be the starter.

Cam Newton has done something in 4 quarters that Clausen didn't do one time all of last year.

Show glimpses of something to get excited about. Maybe they don't happen as much as you would like. But last season it never happened.

Not saying Jimmy cannot turn into a good QB. Just that he didn't show any evidence of that last year.

Pretty sure Clausen threw 3 good passes all of last year, could be wrong though.

Cam hasn't shown as much as some of you claim to have seen.

Um, guys, you know you can't say for sure how a player's career is gonna go after a handful of preseason throws, right? Cam Newton was drafted because Clausen never showed even the slightest glimmer of being a starting NFL quarterback. Cam's going to start for much the same reason. Maybe you like the guy, maybe you don't, but don't claim you can prove he's a bust beyond all doubt based on seeing him play part of 2 meaningless games.

that's not true... Jimmy actually had people excited in preseason, he had a couple nice drives and some nice throws. Clausen also had a couple drives here and there where he was successful during the regular season, and I know that after the Bengals game people were actually positive about him. But reality set in the more he played. TONS of people were all about Clausen at the start of the season, though, and I don't know how you can forget that.

I guarantee you that if Cam was an undrafted free agent rookie with no history and came in and played like he is, there wouldn't be near the excitement about him. Half of the excitement about him is the hope he brings after two national championships at the college level... It's the hope that is most attractive about Cam, not his play so far, though he's had his moments and he's going to hopefully only get better. That's fine, but let's not rewrite history and pretend Clausen never had any nice plays last year either.

I wouldn't have picked any QB in this draft.

Hurney has picked 4 QBs in 2 years.

lol.

Edwards was drafted as WR.....and 7th round QB draft picks are just that. A body.

Clausen was drafted for 1 reason and one reason only. He dropped so far in the draft it was worth simplying taking a gamble on him at that value.

yet your spin is Hurney has gone out and drafted 4 QBs....and whiffed on them.

Hurney drafted Cam.....he and Rivera will probably live or die by that pick of the course of the next 2-3 seasons.

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
