The Herd on Cam Newton today

stats dont mean crap in the preseason, how a player actually plays does.

So if a player plays good wouldn't his stats reflect that? I’m confused. I understand no one cares about wins and losses but to say that stats mean nothing, on a per player basis, at all is perplexing to me. Guess that is how Everette Brown has stayed on the roster so long…Coaches “see” all this talent yet they have nothing to back it up…All the while he is doing his best Tasmanian devil impersonation?

Anyway, we have gone through this last year...if you guys want to refuse to look at the facts that have been laid out so be it, the same things were said last year...Stats mean a lot more than you think in preseason games and can tell you a lot about how the actual season will turn out. Again, I point to last year

If preseason really didn't matter as much as you guys think it doesn't, why play starters at all in chance they get hurt? Sure you can say we do it because we are young and we need the reps but WE are not every team in the NFL. Peyton Manning, Brees and others play just as much in the preseason as our young guys do. Preseason is not just a time to evaluate new talent on a team, it is a dress rehearsal for the season, and so far our dress rehearsals have looked like Barbie pageants

Anyway; working out of town today so I will miss the wonderful post that I’m sure will fill the front page here on the huddle, till later this afternoon. Have a great day huddlers!

P.S. Regardless we will be better than the Raiders this year...guess that is something to be proud of

stats don't mean anything in preseason,, mainly be cause we don't know what the coaches are toying with out there. we don't know who they are looking at or what the objective is on any set of downs. it's not like a regular season game and they don't treat it like it is, esp. the first couple where they don't game plan. they want to see how players look in certain situations and in certain packages. they may put themselves in worse situations to see how players respond.

one obvious example is olindo mare's squib kicks. we all know that he will probably put it through the uprights on most kickoffs. the coaches wanted to see how the kick coverage team does so the had him do squib kicks.

it's all about experimenting with things and players and it's all about the situation. they won't be looking at the stat sheet the way we do. they'll be looking at what they were wanting to do and then reviewing it on game tape to see how it was done. the stats won't play much of a factor in their assessment.

also, stats won't mean a whole lot because the team you are facing is doing the same thing. it's just not like in regular season where your goal is to win the game. it's about looking at who is going to be able to help you do that.

More first downs and zero points...when getting first downs wins games vs points on the board let me know.

To be honest, I find it hard to believe he has more first downs than Clausen...let me google that

Edit 1: I don't know about "drive" attempts but I can tell you that Cam has more passing attempts thus far to be considered the "running QB" seems kinda odd that he would have more passes with less drive attempts.

Anyway; passing attempts after 2 preseason games

Jimmy = 22

Cam = 33

Still looking into the other claim you made

Edit 2: Passer ratings for each after 2 games

Jimmy = 81

Cam = 65

Edit 3: First downs

Jimmy = 9

Cam = 7

Cam has had more plays during the first 2 preseason games

Edit 4: I did not count the TD pass to Olsen as a first down

Edit 5: Stopping after this because I think any rational person can see that the difference between the two isn't really that close...and it favors Jimmy

Passing yards per attempt:

Jimmy = 7.25

Cam = 5.9

Points scored

Jimmy = 17

Cam = 6

you gotta be careful telling cra that jimmy is more productive than anybody, good luck with this argument. I havent gotten to page 2 yet to see his response.

It isn't difficult to find those numbers.....and you don't google it to find it. You won't find anything googling that...

Clausen has had more drive attempts yet Cam has generated more 1st downs with the offense. Yeah, 1st downs don't = TDs but over the course of the season.....you want the QB who will move the ball the easiest on the field w/o turning it over. Clausen = more 3 and outs....and Cam = more 1st downs.....knowing that, give me Cam.

also, the "other claim" I made was Ron Rivera's claim....not mine.

eh, I am not as enthusiastic about as I use to be....Clausen is soon to be a nonissue around here. Some people just can't wrap there heads around that......those are the people who generally blamed everyone including the guy selling peanuts in the stands for Clausen's crap play.

What does any of that have to do with him throwing the football?

Tell me how the game plan made him bounce passes...

We aren't expecting great results, just better overall play, regardless of outcome.

Oh God... he's back. Matt Moore sucked BALLS against us, btw. How did you enjoy watching your man give up a defensive TD? LOL

Matt Moore sucked balls against the Panthers?

If Matt Moore sucked balls, Cam Newton tongue fuged the asshole of a homeless man for 2 hours.

I'd say giving up a fumble for a TD against our 2nd-3rd stringers sucked balls. Cam didn't turn the ball over. Period.

Are you sure you're a Panthers fan and not Matt Moore's girlfriend posting on this website?

    • I mean I think its a bit disingenuous to call basically anyone here a casual fan. I don't think the casual fan creates a profile then logs into it, in the offseason, to comments on mundane offseason topics.. I dont think anyone on here would be considered a casual fan. That said, I get your point. My POV is from the player. They sign this contract, move their family because of these contracts. When Clowney came him, we basically had a coming home party for him.  So yeah, I get why we did it and I know that ultimately the owner doesnt 'save' money, but I can feel for the human side of the player, which is why I want them to get all they can while they can.
    • My guess is the NBA will either send Flagg back “home” to the Northeast in Brooklyn or Washington, or San Antonio so that they can keep building around Wemby. If I was a betting man I would take the odds on the Spurs. This definitely feels like a #1 pick that they will rig.
    • In fairness, she is ensuring she is talked about.  People really aren’t going out there way to bring her up.  It’s some weird poo.  She would end up getting talked about given her actions if she was 40. Bill realizing some of these high end “companions” got a game of their own.  That’s what I don’t think Bill saw coming.
