Brandon Tate May Be Odd Man Out in New England

A year ago at this time, there were hopes Brandon Tate would be the missing piece to the Patriots offense. He turned out to be an effective kick returner and an ineffective No. 3 receiver.

Now we’re not even sure if he’ll even remain with the Patriots.

Second year player Taylor Price has outplayed Tate in camp by all accounts. Price got snaps with Tom Brady Saturday night, but Tate did not.

We should be first on the waiver wire if he gets waived. Brandon Tate could make for an interesting addition to our roster corps, which, let's face it, isn't very deep.

Plus, he's a decent kick returner.

Thoughts?

Sure he never made huge numbers in the Pats' offense, but, look at their offense. For part of the time Tate was there, he had to share catches with Moss, Welker, Hernandez, Gronkowski, Branch, Woodhead, Green-Ellis, etc. There's a lot of receivers on the team, so, receivers past #1 or #2 aren't going to have huge numbers.

Also, I think that he could replace Pilares/Edwards instantly. He's young, still, and could develop into a nice wide receiver at some point. Next year, we could have a wide out corps of Smith, Gettis, LaFell, Tate, Naanee, Pilares... Think about that for a minute.

KR isn't a reason to bring anyone in. 90% of them are going to be TBs anyway. the rest....it just won't matter.

i don't see him as being much of an improvement over who we have on the roster, and that isn't saying that they are anything particularly special either.

only way we bring a new WR is if he's a special talent. i just don't see that happening.

i'd rather be focusing on shoring up the OL, improving DT, and above all getting someone worth a crap in at CB.

    • Yards a game works better over a longer period of time as well. Averages always work out over the long run. The smaller the sample size the easier it is to skew. Also opponents matter more when the size is small. Player 1 lights up 2 bad defenses in 4 starts vs Player 2 playing 10 games vs multiple defenses. It hard to make it apples to apples how it currently sits. Remember during Bryce’s little run last year how annoyed you were when people were pulling Bryce’s starts from week 9 on vs the whole season.
    • Someone else claimed I said EVERY.  Literally in my post breaking it down it gave Bryce TDs per game.   Shough however has the majority in his favor if just looking at starts. whats subjective about comp %, yards, QB ratings and turnovers?  Now I guess the argument one might make off them could be subjective.  But all I’m saying is statistically as a starter he has been better this year overall.  I don’t think Shough is great.  I think he is impressive based on the situation.  2nd rounder stepping in on a bad team.   And he like so many other QBs…..serves as little red flag going off about what we are doing here offensively.
    • Player A - 2 starts.  200 yards in each start. He averages 200 yards a game.  Player B - 1 start.  Throws for 400 yards.  Comes in another random game and has 1 pass attempt on a Hail Mary to end the game that goes incomplete.   Now given the random game he appeared for a snap, he averages 200 yards a game. Thats why you isolate starts. If you are talking starter vs someone who began as a backup.  Simple made up numbers/situations to illustrate the point.
