Godfrey Extended

the kalil deal brought it to $8mil. not sure how we lost $5mil in cap room.

at any rate, godfrey is solid and will be used better in the new system. rivera likes what he can do and is expanding his role. they had no intention of letting him go and it made sense to get it done now rather than later.

Hey, I think Godfrey earns what he gets paid more than Gamble does. You actually see Godfrey make big hits or break up good passes. All I'm saying is the announcement wasn't expected by most this week, and unless it's strategic (freeing up some more money to help with one, or two, good pick ups this week), it wasn't urgent, and other needs could have been the headline.

how can anyone argue what Ron Rivera sees in the kid? last i checked ron has held defenses down for the past 5 years making them very competitive and to cap things off he had the #1 defense last year. you have to be a bone head to think he doesn't know what he's doing before the season starts. i would love to have a space stuffer in the defensive line but if he feels like rotating players will get the job done, i will just hope for the best and try not to expect the worst.

if the contract gets done now, it's for the whole season.

they were trying to do right by the kid.

it wasn't expected because people don't know what's happening in the FO except for the "OMG WE HAZ TO FIND A DT!!!!!!" panic and "O NOZ HURNEEZ A FOOL!!!!!" rants.

evidently, they view godfrey as one of the core players they wanted to lock down, or at least rivera viewed him in that way.

i don't know if it freed up cash or not. they thought it was a priority to make sure he sticks around and saw it necessary to do it now rather than later because they want the guy they will be leaning on know he's thought of highly. they are able to look at a bigger picture than we are capable of and they are looking beyond the immediate needs of this year. that isn't to say they are overlooking this year, because you can do both.

their plans for a DT to be brought in probably has NOTHING to do with the godfrey extension and more than likely one won't interfere with the other as far as cap space is concerned if they already had budgeted what they wanted to spend @ DT.

I wanted a DT as bad as anyone, and felt Hurney made a mistake by not getting one, but at some point, you just have to accept that he and Rivera have a plan, and give them leeway until they are proved wrong. If we get run all over in the Arizona game, I will be bitching about it again, but hope it doesn't come to that.

The advantage to getting Godfrey done now is you avoid the distraction during the season, and you probably get him cheaper than if he is allowed to hit the market.

this is the part I'm not understanding with some people.

Guys, you're wrong if you say they didn't give Godfrey top-flight money. Polamalu just re-upped with the Steelers and Godfrey has more guaranteed money coming his way in this new deal than Polamalu does.

Please stop, Troy's deal is a year shorter than Godfrey's and his base salary is more than his.

Troy: 4-year 36 million and 10 million signing bonus, when he's getting paid 9 million a year.

Godfrey: 5-year 27.5 million a year and 12 million guaranteed, and he's getting paid 5.5 million a year.

Now was that so hard?

CHARLOTTE -- The Carolina Panthers and strong safety Charles Godfrey agreed Saturday to a five-year contract extension.

Doug Hendrickson, Godfrey's agent, said the deal is worth $27.5 million overall, $12.4 million guaranteed.

Troy Polamalu's new four-year deal is worth $36.5 million, and includes a $10.55 million signing bonus.

Doesn't say how much is guaranteed.

    • Sometimes it's nice to get an outside perspective on things we are emotionally invested in. NYT/Athletic did a midway breakdown of every teams' biggest offseason acquisitions. Here's our part: Notable additions: Nikolaj Ehlers ($8.5 million x six years), K’Andre Miller (acquired in exchange for a conditional 2026 first-round pick, a 2026 second-round pick and Scott Morrow) Early return: It took the Hurricanes some time to find Ehlers’ ideal lineup fit. He began the season on a line with Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis, but that combination didn’t really click, with their marquee signing registering just four points in his first 11 games. Since then, though, Ehlers has settled in and found his groove. The dynamic, speedy Danish winger has scored 27 points in his last 31 games. He initially built chemistry with Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake, but with Jarvis’ injury, he’s been bumped back up to the top line with Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, with this new-look trio clicking impressively. Ehlers’ game-breaking puck-carrying ability has added an exciting new dimension to Carolina’s rush attack. He’s been a consistently dangerous play-driver (Carolina’s controlled 60 percent of scoring chances during his five-on-five shifts) and I’d argue his point production has actually undersold his impact on Carolina’s offense. Ehlers has collected a point on just 52 percent of the five-on-five goals he’s been on the ice for — he’s been snakebitten and has deserved to pick up a few more assists. I’m also still a fan of Carolina’s expensive bet on Miller. Yes, he’s made occasional mistakes and has been narrowly outscored during his five-on-five minutes despite his strong underlying metrics, but context is important. Miller was supposed to lead Carolina’s second pair, but Jaccob Slavin’s injuries (he’s only played five games this season) have forced him to take on a larger top-pair role. That’s meant eating a career-high 22:35 per game and handling some of the toughest matchups of all NHL defensemen. Miller has held his own in this daunting role, and I’d expect his performance to level up once Slavin’s return allows him to settle into the second-pair slot he was actually acquired to fill.
