Why do some of these experts think Cam can't develop accuracy....

As a high school quarterback yes, as a NFL quarterback no. After college you either have it or you don't, this is like speed, it isn't something you can really work on.

When you say develop accuracy I believe it is more of the offensive scheme molding to what you're good at, not you becoming more accurate. Did you see Rodgers throw those darts last night? Newton will never be able to do that but if we give him the right scheme it will seem as if his accuracy has improved.

Most of it is mechanics and repetition, something you can definitely work on.

Thats bullpoo to me. I mean how is accuracy something you just have, its not like being clutch where there is a large mental aspect to it. It boils down to throwing the football, its all mechanical and he has shown accuracy, he just doesnt show it all the time.

Exactly. Accuracy is something you develop when you are able to quickly analyse, evaluate and execute all the elements involved in throwing to a moving target which is traveling a prescribed route while defenders are trying to disrupt the receiver and inhibit a catch. You improve with repetition and practice until you have mastered every element and can reproduce it consistently.

accuracy is by definition producing consistently predictable results. If it is not consistent, it isn't accuracy.

see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accuracy_and_precision#Accuracy_versus_precision:_the_target_analogy

That is true.

And to achieve that consistency I would think you have to value being accurate enough to work on improving yours above all else. With a guy like Vick, he didn't worry about being accurate above all else because he was such a great athlete and runner. He didn't think he needed to be accurate to be effective. He was lazy and didn't put in the work in Atlanta. Last year was his first year after doing the work and it showed.

When you look at a guy like Brees you know he put a lot of work into rehabbing his shoulder and working on his arm strength and his accuracy after SD gave up on him. Add to that, the fact that at his size, height, and weight, he couldn't be anything but a quarterback or a kicker. He isn't big, strong, fast or athletic. But he can read a defense and sling a ball with the best of them. He needed to be like that, otherwise why would you want him at QB??

My hope is that Newton realizes that while his present future will include healthy doses of running and passing, his future will hinge on his passing more than his running. We know quarterbacks who were either great passers or great runners. How many guys can claim to be great runners and great passers?

He has the chance to be both but only if he puts in the work, values accuracy above all else, and is able to deliver the ball accurately from different angles, off of either foot, stationary or on the move. That isn't something you just have, but is honed over years of intentional practice.

Agree?

I’ve heard some “experts” say you can’t really develop accuracy. You either have it or you don’t…I think Meril Hodge said that but I don’t trust him anyway.

Not directed at you but towards that line of "reasoning"...

Of course guys like Joe Montana, Steve Young, Dan Marino, and Tom Brady came out of the womb throwing footballs through the middle of tires 30 yards away.

My take? Cam IS accurate, as someone else said, it's a matter of getting reps and getting his accuracy to be consistent. He's made some throws in the preseason that only ELITE QBs make, he just has to make those throws regularly.

I believe he will... He's gonna be really good.

dont mean to be a total cack, but Vick hasn't won a super bowl...

But....Vick is a much better QB now. Before, with ATL, he was more of an athlete than a QB. He could make plays that other QBs couldn't, but he couldn't make plays that QBs could. Now, he's shifted into more of a QB mentality, and he's a better player.

Cam will (hopefully) develop this. Lose the playground mentality, and start playing pro ball. Maybe this week, maybe next, somebody is gonna hit Cam hard. He's gonna get pissed, and start throwing hard. No more throwing off the back foot, he'll start leaning into the throws. And those will be caught. Remember the Bears game 2-3 years ago- we weren't doing crap, and then they got a late hit on Jake while he was down. He got up pissed. And he whipped dat ass the rest of the game.

to me its more about consistent accuracy than accuracy. How can anyone deny he didnt have moments in the preseason where he showed accuracy. Moreover these moments came when he stepped into throws and didnt revert to poor mechanics like throwing off his back foot. I mean if he can show flashes of being accurate, why can that turn into consistency w/ time?

Your title is confusing (double negative). However, we all hope he becomes accurate. Nobody knows. Jack of All Trades hit it on the head, if you ask me.
