Kurt Warner owns up and keeps it classy

Sorry Kurt, but one tweet isn't going to do it for me. I watched too many smug comments about how Cam just didn't have what it takes to be successful in the league. And this coming from a guy that battled for a long time to get his shot.

He is going to have to eat a lot more crow before I'm satisfied. :boxing_smiley:

Good job Warner. That takes balls to admit that. I wish half the people who whacked on Newton would do the same but then again only a real man can admit his doing wrong.

I know its only one game but then again what kind of Rookie QB has ever made the kind of numbers in his first NFL game like Cam did?

The guy we saw in preseason three wasn't ready.

Two weeks of prep and practice later though, and the difference is night and day. The coaching staff did a phenomenal job getting him up to speed.

But make no mistake. A much tougher test is coming next week. And there most definitely is still work to do.

As a first step though, I'll take it :)

All he ever said was that he didn't think that Cam was ready yet. That's it. He never badmouthed cam or his skills. What do you want from him. He is paid to give his opinion. If Cam had a bad day today instead, I am sure you were prepared to post an apology to Warner even though you aren't paid for your opinion!

No, he went a lot farther than that, and pretty much ridiculed the whole idea of a "run first QB" being successful in the league.

I admit I am not a big fan of Warner as an analyst. Sometimes it is as though he has forgotten his roots and all the struggles he went through to get his shot. As someone that bucked the odds for his whole career, I expect him to be a bit more open-minded.

But that is water under the bridge and there is no point belaboring it further.

I can't wait to see what Skip Bayless says about Cam. I can kind of guess it will go something like:

"ok, i will admit that Cam Newton did better than I expected. But I tell you (whoevers sitting across from him) this will go down as the great start to a bad career. Yeah he threw 422 yards, and had 3 tds but it was against the Arizona Cardinals, are you kidding me. I promise you if it were The Golden Calf of Bristol the Panthers would have won this game 42-7. I'm giving his performance a D- since he couldn't stop Jeff King, Early Doucet, and Peterson from scoring like The Golden Calf of Bristol could."

Wasn't going to start a new thread for this, but read this tweet by Braylon Edwards.

How do you interpret this?

While I cannot dispute Skip's love for The Golden Calf of Bristol, Bayless is actually a Cam supporter. He has been on record saying he thought he would struggle this season but have a great career.

Last week they were ranking their top 5 QBs and someone jokingly said to Skip, "Cam isn't in your top 5?" Skip paused, got big eyed, and said..."Not YET."

But yeah Skip is an idiot a lot of times.

    • Watched the recent Mic'd up which had the Bucs game. This angle makes that fumble look so much worse, pretty sure it was inbetween Bryce's hands.   bbb.mp4
    • Here is what you did not mention (and I have not read the thread--but will--it is a needed) and that is the MAFF.  He is in a contract year (2026-5th year) and we will not know (in all likelihood) how the knee is healing by the time we have to decide on a mega deal.   If you consider the time it takes to fully heal is 12 months if all goes well, the injury is known to shorten careers.  Of course, a man of 330 lbs who needs agility to perform at a high level makes the injury a bit more serious than it was for Jimmy Graham, for example, who recovered in a remarkable 9 months.  Having said all that, I think he should be moved inside to guard.   While many NFL linemen can return to play after patellar tendon surgery, studies show a significant failure rate and reduced performance, with return-to-play (RTP) rates often cited around 50-56%, meaning roughly 44-50% don't make it back, and even those who do often see reduced careers and statistics, highlighting it as a devastating injury for linemen." I think you have to go after an elite OT, and I think it should be a first rounder because you don't sign elite LTs in free agency.  Ickey is already going to get paid $18m or so in 2026.    However, the money you save by not locking him down long term could go to a free agent edge or ILB.  It is very complicated if you start factoring in contracts, risks, cap, and the odds of recovery.
    • Yes, we played the 2nd most cover 3 in the NFL behind the Raiders.   The flats and seams are the areas you want to attack it so its soft spots are areas qbs can hit quickly which can definitely hurt the pass rush.
