Building Through The Draft

Recommended Posts

Our front office has done a great job building through the draft. The majority of our talent is home grown. I have confidence that in April they will continue to draft well. Just so we don't forget lets take a look.

QB Jake Delhomme (Free Agent 03)

RB D. Williams (Draft 06) J. Stewart (Draft 08)

FB B. Hoover (Undrafted Free Agent 00)

TE J. King (Draft 06)

OT J. Otah (Draft 08)

OG K. Vincent (Free Agent 08)

C. R. Kalil (Draft 07)

OG T. Wharton (Draft 04)

OT J. Gross (Draft 03)

WR S. Smith (Draft 01)

WR M. Muhammed (Draft 96, Free Agent 08)

DE J. Peppers (Draft 02) **For Now**

DT. K. Maake (Free Agent 06)

DT. D. Lewis (Free Agent 06)

DE C. Johnson (Draft 07)

OLB T. Davis (Draft 05)

MLB J. Beason (Draft 07)

OLB N. Diggs (Free Agent 06)

CB R. Marshall (Draft 06)

CB C. Gamble (Draft 04)

S. C. Harris (Trade 07)

S. C. Godfrey (Draft 07)

I am sure there are those that will argue Moose is a Free Agent but I say it was correcting a bad decision. Some will contend that T. Braxton is the start. But since this is my thread this is how I see it. Bottom line 16/22 positions are draft choices. (hoover considered a draft choice considering he never played for anyone but Carolina)

Bottom line. We may not be hot in the Free Agent Market but I am confident that we will find more talent to fill our voids.

i see what you are saying but this year is diff..we have no first round pick and on top of that all the postions that we are in need of are weak in this draft class..so maybe this is the year to mix it up just this one time

Oh don't get me wrong, we have been solid (not as solid as the draft) in the Free Agent market too.

S. Davis

N. Diggs

J. Delhomme

K. Vincent

I think with the lack of funds we are going to have to be creative in our selections. I would like to see a Corner Back or DT but unless we get rid of Peppers I just don't see us having any money to do anything. So the draft choices are going have to be very special. This offseason will test the metal of our front office.

the reality of the situation is we do have one, we just used it last year on a stud OT. i have no problems...not a technicality. we used already used our #1 and it was a steal.

we can do fine with the group of picks we have available. while 8 of our starters were 1st rounders (lewis was a 1st for the rams in '01) 14 of our starters were not.

2nd - 3

3rd - 4

4th - 1

5th - 1

6th - 1

UDFA - 4

we have plenty of opportunities to fill what few holes we have and get solid depth. i'm not worried. i know that our 1st rounder this year was used wisely. if peppers is traded, i have no doubt that we will have at least one 1st from the deal and that, based on history, we will have another solid contributor/starter for a long time.

just a look back at what we have done and where our players have come from:

1st rounders starting:

'09 -otah

'08 - stewart

'07 - beason

'06 - williams

'05 - davis

'04 - gamble

'03 - gross

'02 - peppers

QB Jake Delhomme (Free Agent 03) - UDFA Saints/97

RB D. Williams (Draft 06) J. Stewart (Draft 08) - both 1st rounders

FB B. Hoover (Undrafted Free Agent 00)

TE J. King (Draft 06) - 5th round

OT J. Otah (Draft 08) - 1st round

OG K. Vincent (Free Agent 08) - UDFA Steelers/01

C. R. Kalil (Draft 07) - 2nd round

OG T. Wharton (Draft 04) - 3rd round

OT J. Gross (Draft 03) - 1st round

WR S. Smith (Draft 01) 3rd round

WR M. Muhammed (Draft 96, Free Agent 08) - 2nd round

DE J. Peppers (Draft 02) **For Now** - 1st round

DT. K. Maake (Free Agent 06) - UDFA Ravens/02

DT. D. Lewis (Free Agent 06) - 1st round Rams/01

DE C. Johnson (Draft 07) - 3rd round

OLB T. Davis (Draft 05) - 1st round

MLB J. Beason (Draft 07) - 1st round

OLB N. Diggs (Free Agent 06) - 4th round Packers/00

CB R. Marshall (Draft 06) - 2nd round

CB C. Gamble (Draft 04) - 1st round

S. C. Harris (Trade 07) - 6th round Bears/05

S. C. Godfrey (Draft 07) - 3rd round

This should show everyone that Fox, Hurney and the F.O. staff have done a great job building this team. I remember when we first got them "Core Players" was the key word. Keeping our Core Player. For the most part they have. Witherspoon, Moose and a few other have slipped away but for the most part we have kept our talent.

Jon Stewart or Otah if they came out in the 09 draft they would be the #1 pick overall.

That's quite a stretch, but your sentiment is noted. Stewart without the toe concerns would have been top 5 last year. It's fortunate that the Panthers team surgeon was the one who did the surgery, so we knew that he was going to be fine. Otah would have definitely been top 10 this year...

IMO you would be hard pressed to find any team in the NFL that has their own 1st round draft picks from the last 7 years still on their team AND starting. It's pretty impressive really, every Draft that Fox/Hurney has had, they have nailed the 1st round.

It's the 2nd and 3rd rounders where I think that Fox/Hurney seem to miss more.

Well lets consider those our first rounders this year, they need to be successful with those picks. Godfrey, The TE group, Kalil, Wharton, Jarrett, Johnson, Marshall all second round or lower picks and will be starters or significant contributor's this coming season.

yeah we've had great 1st round picks in the past...but this year we ain't got a 1st rounder...so until we trade peppers it's going to stay that way,and the way it's looking is that we won't trade peppers this year which pisses me off cuz theirs some good young talent at the DE position that i want carolina to draft so heres my mock draft..... johnson out of GT would be a good pass rusher and run stopper for us if we get a 1st from somebody...2nd round get a CB idk which one their's a lot of good one's...3rd i know i already said johnson but david veikune out of hawaii is also a very good pass rusher and we might not even have to use a 3rd on him cuz he might still b around in the 4th and 5th to 7th get O-line i know it's a bum mock draft but it's somthing

we do have a 1st round this year. we got otah.

But is Otah better than the 29th overall pick + a 2nd Rounder + a 4th Rounder? That seems to be the part that everyone is missing. Yeah, Otah has been great for us. But, we coulda gotten Malcom Kelly, Desean Jackson, etc. with that 2nd rounder. Hard to tell how successful the 4th rounder would be... but it's a much better question when you consider the other picks we gave up for Otah.

    • Give me Mitchell Evans over T Sanders in this run heavy offense any day of the week.
    • What's up gents, the OGs remember me, the guy who single-handedly gave the Panthers the greatest uniform in history moniker. Not too long after that I got involved with Pro Football Focus (pre-Collinsworth acquisition) and ended up taking backseat here to preserve some objectivity. But from a distance I noticed a lot. After the end of the Cam era this place devolved into the most un-fun, petty, negative cesspool of whining and bitching that has ever graced the internet. The worst part of it all is that the level of discussion turned into the most ill-informed, hot-take, unnuanced crap, rife with people talking out of their posteriors as if they have any clue about what they are watching. Once you get into the professional side of the sport and actual film rooms, you start to understand there's an absurd number of moving parts to pretty much every snap and the details you are privy to are truly only half the picture. The absolute most important thing I learned from being part of professional level football analysis is that quarterbacking is literally the most intricate and difficult position in all of professional sports, and that the NFL itself is struggling to develop any workable model that allows them to understand what makes one succeed vs what makes one fail. Because of this paradox it has also made the quarterback position itself grossly overvalued from a fan and media standpoint, creating an absurd fixation on the results delivered by a single player who has to rely on the contributions of everyone around them. This also drives the dreaded inflation of QB salaries that inevitably cause even elite teams to lose key talent all to pour cash into the one player supposed to be able to single-handedly elevate the entire team (and defense and special teams and coaching and ownership by some mysterious proxy), yet without those same players even talented teams can wander the wilderness searching for the right guy to take advantage of their talent window. The discussions the last few years around Bryce has personified this insanity, as this board has devolved into some sort of electronic civil war between the hyperbolic Young supporters and the vitriolic Bryce haters. The reality, like practically everything in this world, is somewhere in the middle. He has traits that can absolutely elevate a team with creativity, play recognition, off-arm angle throws, mental toughness, etc. He's also physically limited, with mostly "good-enough" qualities for most situations that a professional quarterback is asked to do, and will never be an overpowering physical force like pre-injury Cam. But "good-enough" physicality represents a large majority of championship-winning quarterbacks, even in the modern era. There's a reason the corpse of Peyton Manning took the chip from elite physical specimen Cam, because the team surrounding him was talented enough to get him there, while we all know Cam was the driving force of that 2015 team. That's no knock on him, that's just how the game of football tends to work: the more complete team usually wins. The summary is this: if this team lives or dies solely on the performance of its quarterback, then it is absolutely a paper tiger even if he plays brilliantly week in and out. There are no superheroes in this sport, there are only conduits that proxy the collective efforts of much of the team around them. And no one alive can tell you how the position is played perfectly, it's all a confluence of circumstance and what unique collection of traits each player brings to the position, which can never be truly recreated season after season, even for the same player on the same team. If this place remains a raging hellscape of idiotic hot takes I will happily remove myself again and do something more productive for yet another decade, but maybe's there hope that we can all get back to the old adage, and keep pounding.
