Examining the first TD

I know we don't have the weapons on offense that New Orleans has, and Cam might not have the cerebral part of the game down to the point of Drew Brees yet, but NO shredded that defense. This isn't Foxball Panthers. We have an amazing RB tandem. We have a pretty good O-line. We have a QB making the right reads and making fairly sound decisions. We have Olsen & Shockey. And most of all, we have a happy, excited Steve Smith. When he likes his QB and likes being here, he is hard to stop. It should at least be closer than people think.

That part might be fairly easy

I made the mistake in another thread of saying this TD was the result of a blown coverage... now that I've seen this I realize it was not, it was the result of Cam making an excellent pre-snap read and knowing he had 89 matched up one-on-one with a safety on a go route.

Guess we can check "too dumb to make pre-snap reads" off our list.

Rhodes was beaten so bad it looked like blown coverage

Love Eugene Robinson's comments on that clip.

A lot of spread QBs get the "can they make reads" question because in some systems they're not asked to. Likewise, receivers who play in very simplified pass attacks get questioned about route running, runningbacks about blitz pickup, etc.

That's one of the tough things about draft evaluation, figuring out whether somebody can do something they haven't done as much, or at all, before.

I like what I see from that play... and it gives me a feeling of hope for our future. I also liked what I heard from Rivera's presser afterwards. He didn't cast off blame, or deny anything was wrong or right. He stated simply: we did some good things today, we did some bad things today... those bad things will be fixed.

Thank GAWD there's no more Foxtalk in Carolina... this sounds like a coach should be - accountable for every facet of his team, and ready to work hard to get it right. :)

With all this talk of the Green Bay juggernaut, we need to keep a bit of perspective.

There were several games last year when GB was very ordinary on offense. GB had 7 games last year in which they scored 20 or fewer points. They lost to Washington, Miami, and Detroit.

They were on a roll in the playoffs last year, and have started strong this year, but there is no reason for anyone to feel intimidated by them. Teams rarely are as good as they look in their big wins, or as bad as they look in the big losses.

These comments are not intended to diss GB in any way. They are a great team. But they can and will be beaten this year, and it is possible on any given Sunday.

Yup, GB can be beat - they were impressive on Thursday night but they are far from a juggernaut.
