Cam Newton Sets Another Rookie Record!

Maybe Cam had a so-so day but he still got the win which will go a long way in his development.

The first two weeks of Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton’s career have been pretty exciting after back-to-back performances with over 400 passing yards–but the former Heisman Trophy winner entered Week 3 still searching for his first career win. On Sunday, Newton accomplished his main goal against the Jacksonville Jaguars and even set a new record in the process.

While it may not have been another 400-yard performance, Newton completed 18 of 34 passes for 158 yards with one touchdown–setting a record by becoming the first rookie to throw for over 1,000 passing yards in his first three games. Through three games, Newton has already thrown for 1,012 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

The best part is, Carolina is 1-2 and each of their two losses have been by just seven points–so this team has definitely improved from their 2-14 finish from one year ago.

It may be early, but it’s safe to say the Panthers made the right decision when they used the No. 1 pick on Newton last April instead of giving Jimmy Clausen–who threw for just three touchdowns in 13 games as a rookie last season–another chance to prove himself. Newton has progressed quicker than anyone expected and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he sets a few more records the rest of his rookie season.

Not so impressed by all the records yet. Cam is talented but is still a rookie with lots of work to do. The best thing he's done all year imo is winning ugly. He had a bad day yesterday, missed a lot of passes, probably should have increased his int by 2 but still found a way to win and made the right plays when it really mattered. He had similar chances against AZ and GB but came up just a bit short. Not this time though.

That is the stat that will define him as a player

You know it really went both ways in terms of turnovers. Cam should have had a few picks but how many fumbles did the jaguars recover...a few that seemed we had someone right there. And if Newton is on target with a few of his throws early in the game I think this one would have been a blowout.

We picked a GOOD day to have a BAD day.

It's never going to be a great passing game with drizzle and rain the whole time. Playing in that slop is going to inhibit offenses. The ball is slick, it's humid, your sweat doesn't dry from your hands. You can go through towel after towel and you still can't get your hands to dry. That's just the way it is. It's just like driving your car in the rain. You have to slow it down and avoid trouble. The wet conditions effected both teams, so neither put up big numbers. We played cautiously and came out on top.

    • Dude you have no idea what you're talking about. Best place to live?  LMAO... that's your criteria...  Charlotte gets put all over those lists too... come on man... and those lists have zero to do with sports. I'm done after this bc I'm punching down intellectually here... The Panthers have been bad for 6 years now. You are obviously young and not overly educated based off the "dunks" you're putting out there that certainly are, so let me educate you today on the Panthers. The Panthers sold out for well over a decade straight. BOA has been as good an environment as there is when the team is good.  Fan support for the Panthers has been incredible when the team has even remotely reciprocated. The idea that Charlotte doesn't support the Panthers is utter BS. People in Raleigh have the biggest little brother syndrome of all time... Nobody outside of the Triangle cares about any of your "vaunted" sports team outside of Duke-UNC in basketball on a national scale. Sure, the Canes are great. But nationally, the WWE dwarfs the NHL in ratings. More people care about Cody Rhodes than Sebastian Aho... or anyone else in the NHL for that matter... I doubt less than 5% of anyone in this state outside of Raleigh even knows who that is... that's a knock on Aho who is a great player, it's just the NHL barely makes a ripple in the overall hierarchy of American sports. It's not in the same universe as the NFL or NBA no matter how badly you want to tell yourself otherwise. Raleigh is not a big-time sports city, no matter how much you want to scream into the abyss about it. Neither is Charlotte. But no one here is making such a nonsense argument... LOL it's good to be young and to be ignorant enough to be confidently wrong... WTF are you even on this board though since Charlotte is so beneath you? There is an actual discussion board on this very site for Raleigh sports since they are so superior...  Maybe it's bc I'm watching Idiocracy with my son, but your timing is perfect, my man... The dumbest among us have become the most confidence in their ignorance... God Bless America!!
    • You do know the biggest military base in the US is located just an hour from Raleigh in Fort Bragg right? Military families are family oriented. A hour drive to games is nothing compared to traveling 3 hours to Charlotte.   Cmon man there is nothing happening in Western Carolina other than Charlotte. I only go west for outdoor activities and some nature/mountain views.
    • Okay, who is coming. And how hard is it going to be to get tickets? I’m currently living in Germany a couple hours north of Munich. Happy to help facilitate a cheaper experience for help getting tickets lol.
