after 3 games panthers ranked 7th on total offense and 17th on total defense...

Total yard stats are really useless. There is one telling stat that makes all the difference which is points for and points against. It doesn't matter how many yards you are giving up as long as the opponent is scoring less points than you are.

Through three weeks on offense we are tied at 17th with Chicago each scoring 20 points a game.

On defense we are surrendering 22.7 points a game at number 17. chicago is right behind at 18th at 23 points a game.

As long as we are surrendering more points than we are scoring, it will be hard to have a winning record. As for Chicago, seems they are right there with us. Should be a tough game.

bahh...too early for reality. we just got a win. time for some fluff!!

btw...it only makes sense that after a 1-2 record that we would have surrendered more points than we have scored.

It usually works that way if the games are close. On the other hand if you get blown out by 20 and win 2 games by 7 or less you can be 2-1 and still surrender more than you score. Obviously if you blow someone out and lose two close owns the opposite holds true as well.

Still the point is that if you are Buffalo and score 37 points a game, you can have a pretty average defense surrendering 24 points a game (ranked 20th) and still be 3-0. New Orleans is surrendering over 29 points a game. But they are scoring over 35. Doesn't really matter what the number is as long as you are routinely scoring more than you give up.

You are spot on.

The clear way to evaluate your defense or offense results is by looking at all of the different stats/rankings in totality.

For instance, you can be Top10 in pass defense and last in rushing defense. People will talk about how great your pass defense is. However, people are running all over you and don't really need to pass.

All in all, I think we are middle of the pack on both offense and defense.

We put up yards in the first two games, but struggled to run and to score in the red zone.

We have done OK on defense (better than I thought we would early on). However, we have had several MAJOR breakdowns that cost us games....coudl be 3-0 without a few total lapses on defense.

We are headed in the right direction.

Ever heard of being a d*ck to another poster for no reason?

too many people come here trying to say something cute or be hateful just to get some pi or rep!

just my take on the rankings: i think you have to take into account the level of talent chicago has played: ATL, GB and NO. while ATL looks bad so far, they are still better than the jags or cards.

yea, but the problem with that is unless you go back and check how many touchdowns the defense gave up, you're also including TDs scored on pick 6s or fumble returns against your offense and special teams returns. For example, against Arizona the defense only gave up 21 points. This is why I primarily use football outsiders for stats.

Yep. Chicago has played what looked to be 3 playoff caliber teams (and still could be). Us being on the road as well, stats be damned they have to feel really good this week. Now let's go beat Jay Cutler into the ground.
