Ryne has the potential to be much better. Potential is the key word there, though.

So did Colbert..

I agree with E9... Sacrificing results -vs- potential seems ridiculous... I just hope Robinson stays consistent. Roster spot or not, Jones did more for our team than anyone in the last several years at that position.

Damn, everybody is acting like Jones was breaking 15 tackles every time he touched the ball. He was solid, and he had great blocking...that's all. Usually, when he had those long returns, he wasn't even touched until the punter or kicker tackled him.

Give Robinson the same blocking and he will do the same thing, except he will most likely beat the kicker. This is like Taye Biddle all over again.

Jones was solid, not great. Robinson started showing some potential in '07, then had the injury. He could possibly give some depth at receiver too, something Jones really wasn't going to do. Moore could be a guy that gives them something too. If I remember correctly, he was a pretty good player at Wake. I think the return game will be alright.

Fixed.;)

For cryin out loud, Jones was 38th in average KO return yardage. We didn't just lose Devon Hester.

You're looking at the unadjusted stats for returners. He was 12th in the league among kickoff returners that fielded 40 or more kicks. Not bad considering it has been one bad returner after another since Michael Bates left. 12th is above league average.

Of his 40 kick returns, 27 went for 20+ yards. 4 went for 40+ yards. He was easily a Top 15 kickoff returner last season.

And get this, he was 2nd in the entire NFL in punt return average with 11.4 yards per return among players with 35 or more punt returns.

Just because he didn't dance and run laterally for 10 yards on every return and then bust it out doesn't mean he's not a good returner. Mark Jones knows his craft very well. He doesn't have blazing speed back there but he takes the yardage that he is given and runs in a straight line to do what returners are supposed to do.... get yardage to set up the offense.

With a grinding offense like we run that is 60/40 run to pass we NEED that starting field position in order to score points. Mark Jones put us on the 30-35 yard line nearly every return and that is an asset. That is one or two less first downs per drive that you have to earn.

The bottom line is that people are highly underrating what Jones did for this offense last year. The Panthers better be darn sure that Robinson is ready to handle these duties or else we're going to have a harder time putting up points.

That's not saying much though. Jones isn't a stud or anything, he was just decent, and we had never really had that besides Michael Bates back in the day.

I thought Mark did a really good job returning, but I am excited to see if Robinson can be even better. He really showed some promise near the end of the 2007 season and was obviously improving. So hopefully he will continue to improve and our return game shouldn't drop off much if at all.

    • Are you now equating best/worst rush defense with best/worst defense? Those are separate things entirely. For rush defense, depending on how you quantify it, he has been largely in the bottom third of the league his entire career as a defensive coordinator.  As you can see, aside from his one year in Denver, he has never been above 20th in yardage. Now, there is context to consider which is most coordinators choose to run on him(24th-32nd ranked in his three year in Carolina). So, if you just simply look at Y/A, it has been a relatively mixed bag. Twice a top 15 defense but twice a bottom 15 defense.  The thing the should make all this good/bad run defense a lot clearer is the right most columns. Evero's defense has always prioritized pass defense and confusing QB's. That's the core of his defensive philosophy, as has been reported relatively widely. As much as there are ample personnel issues on that side of the ball(many of which he contributes to with his below average talent evaluations) his defenses may never be truly elite in rush and pass defense unless they are stocked with defensive talent. Like....his Denver defense that he inherited was. To that point, if you look at all those rankings from the three years Fangio(of whom Evero is a noted disciple) it shows a progression of getting steadily better into the far more elite defense it is now under Vance Joseph. As far as his HC interest, recall that he was a hot commodity after Denver and that cooled significantly after his first two years here. I suppose if you count getting interviews for HC positions as a benchmark for being a good coach(most would not) then he is middle of the packish.
